Impossible Stars (Sugawara Koushi X Reader) [One-Shot]

                A/N: Here’s a new one! I just recently watched Haikyuu!! and let’s just say I’m HOOKED!! And of course I couldn’t help but to write a one shot of this especially with Suga!! He’s my most favorite out of everyone in that show. He’s just so adorable and cute~ Anyway, please do tell me if you guys think I should do more with him because I wouldn’t mind it at all ^w^ and of course I won’t stop writing more with Arthur (I don’t think I could if I tried XD) plus I need to finish some of them to =3=. Also, if you guys want to hear this song, Holes in the Sky by M83 with HAIM (Song from the movie Insurgent I just watched it recently :3) you could probably find it on YouTube or Spotify. But that song was definitely an inspiration for this writing so enjoy!

    Feet shuffling across the moist grass, you slowly trudged around in the familiar grass of the school’s yard thinking of the impossible. The impossible that you had so desperately wanted to come true. But with how things were now you knew it was a fat chance it was actually going to happen to you. Sighing, you slowly sat down not caring if you got wet and looked up at the night sky. It was clear tonight, not a cloud in the sky to disturb the beauty that you were staring at. Why had you fallen for such a person? Yeah, he was kind and was cute but he already has too much on his plate to even think about a thing like a romance… Gulping down your thoughts, you didn’t take notice to the sounding footsteps until a slightly concerned silvered haired boy looked down at you blocking your view of the sky. Why was he here?

    “[f/n]?” His eyebrows furrowed together. “Are you alright?”

    “Oh hey, Koushi,” You allowed a small smile to appear up at him. “Lovely night we’re having huh?”

    Sighing, he knew you were dismissing his question but he pushed that aside and slowly sat next to your laying figure and smiled up at the sky, “Yeah, I suppose you’re right…it is rather beautiful out tonight…”

    “Yeah…” Your eyes averted from the sky once more only to look upon the beauty you sought was impossible to reach. His hair gently ruffled in the small breeze as it whisked around in the air allowing the leaves and surrounding things to rustle and sound in the nightly air. You were always a bit jealous of this young man in front of you… He had everything you didn’t. His kind and caring words, his loving smile, his aggressive passion for volleyball, and more importantly the love he receives from his teammates… That was something you always envied of him, not only because he got such love from other people but he always returned it without a thought. He even gives you the same love he has for his teammates but it wasn’t the love you were searching for… You wanted something more, something deeper…

    “[f/n]?” His voice snapped you back to reality. Immediately you looked away obliviously feeling a bit embarrassed since he caught you staring but judging by his expression he didn’t seem to mind too much. Or just didn’t really show it… “Are you sure you’re alright?”

    “Y-Yeah,” You tried to dismiss your blushing cheeks. “I-I’m fine but what are you doing here?”

    “I could ask you the same thing,” He chuckled. “But I was just finishing up some personal practice…”

    “This late?” Your eyebrows shot up.

    “Yeah, I need it,” He sighed small pushing up his slight yellowed sweater sleeves in thought. “Why are you here [f/n]-chan?”

    “Mm, I left something here so I came and got it,” You made a white lie. Truth be told you were just here because you wanted to get away from your house and family to think and this was the closest option.

    You knew he wasn’t satisfied with you answer but he just simply sighed once again and gently laid down next to your small figure while looking up at the twinkling sky. His eyes grazed across the stars until they glanced over at you just as you turned back your own gaze to the sky. You couldn’t be caught staring again! Yeah, the both of you were good friends but even the slightest clue to your crush may give away your feelings…

    Although, you highly doubt he would actually take notice if you did ended up getting caught once more. That was another thing that annoyed you, his obliviousness. It’s like there’s a brick wall in between him and your feelings making it impossible for him to read them. Or maybe he does notice and chooses to ignore them… But would he really do that? That’s just wasn’t something Suga did… But then how would you know? You were his friend but sometimes you felt like you were always a step behind him… A step that you could never reach or even touch. You knew he loved volleyball, so much so that he pours his soul and life into it. But then there were times where he gives his all to other people like his friends and teammates. So what is he reaching for? What does he yearn for? Does he yearn for you like you do him? Or was it just one-sided…

    “Koushi…” You barely whispered his name. Hearing his name from your lips, he looked over at you with curiosity and raised an eyebrow in question. Thinking he wasn’t listening, you continued while staring up at the sky with some sorrow. “What do you really want?”

    “Honestly…” You heard him sigh and looked back towards the sparkling sky, you didn’t actually think he was listening to you… “I don’t know myself…”

    “You don’t?” Your voice rose with surprise. To you, he was always the man who knew what he wanted to strive for so this was definitely a shock to you.

    “Don’t sound so surprised,” He chuckled turning his head over towards you allowing his gaze to meet yours.

    “But-But,” You argued turning on your side making it so your front was facing him now. “You always seem like you know what you want to do…”

    “Do I?” His eyebrows raised.

    “Yeah,” You slowly nodded looking down at the grass remembering the time he told you he wasn’t going to give up being the official setter. Right then and there, he looked so sure of himself that you even felt his passion rubbing off on you. “You play your heart out whenever you’re on the court or even when you’re cheering on your team and you always look confident… So much so that I can feel it radiating off of you…” Your expression slowly melted into a mournful one before looking up at him. “So why don’t you know?”

    “…”His eyes flickered between yours until he gave a small sigh and turned on his own side allowing his front to be facing your own while he tucked his right arm under his head. “It’s not that simple [f/n]…”

    “How so?” You raised an eyebrow.

    “Well…” He thought for a second before glancing back at the sky. “It’s like this…” He pointed up at it making your own gaze to lift upwards. “The moment I believe there is something that I want or try to reach for there are multiple other things that I find just behind that goal…” He tried to explain. “Just like how you glance up at the sky towards one star but even then you know there are billions of others that are far beyond just that one star…its almost infinite…”

    “…”

    “Now do you see why?” He dropped his hand next to yours.

    “Yeah…I suppose,” You smiled small before glancing down at your nearly touching fingers. “But you know sometimes there are stars you can’t reach…even after you try your hardest it’s just too far to grab ahold of it…”

    “Mm, you may be right,” He admitted with a small sad smile. “But…” His sudden change in voice made you look up into his admiring gaze. “How do you know you’re trying your hardest when you have already giving up?”

    “…U-Uh,” Your heart skipped. How did he do that? How does he know how to stop your train of thought and heart just by saying a couple of words while giving you a sweet gaze?

    “Hey [f/n]…” His voice sounded close to a whisper. Curious, you looked over and found him gazing up at the sky once again in thought. His hair haloed around his head while all the same the breeze ruffled through it once more not letting your heart calm itself down just yet. “Could I ask you something?”

    “Uh-Y-Yeah,” You nodded, gulping down your nerves. “W-What is it?”

    “What…” He hesitated momentarily only to slowly bring his warm brown gaze back to yours. “What are you reaching for?”

    You…

    “Me?” You pointed at yourself.

    “Yes, you,” He chuckled at your innocence. “Who else would I be talking to?”

    “I-I don’t know,” You blushed feeling embarrassed for the second time tonight and buried your face into the cool grass below you. “Maybe someone snuck up behind me?”

    “That’s highly doubtful,” He laughed only to quiet down in thought. “But… [f/n] what do you want? You really don’t talk about it much…”

    That’s because you are what I want…

    “Do I really have to answer that?” You nervously smiled up from your hiding spot.

    “It’s only fair,” He smiled small. “After all I did…”

    “Mm fine,” You huffed and turned back towards the sky in thought. It’s not like you could just come out and say what you really want… That could turn out bad, bad enough that the both of you might not even be friends if you did such a thing. You hated that thought… “Well truthfully…” You closed your eyes with a small frown. “What I want isn’t possible…”

    “What?” His eyebrows furrowed together, confused. “How so?”

    “He’s too far for me to reach…” You absent mindedly reached up towards the twinkling stars.

    “He’s?” You heard your mistake from his lips. “Who?”

    “Er-what I meant to say that-that…” You dropped your arm and tried to reach for an excuse. “I-I meant it’s too far…not he, I-I don’t even have any ideas who I-I’m talking about…” His silence gave you a gnawing hole in your stomach, you hoped you hadn’t hurt his feelings in anyway. Looking over, you found his gaze drawn to the sky again but he held a disappointed gaze rather than a peaceful one he had on earlier. Was it something that you had said? “K-Koushi-kun…” You reached for his features but stopped short. You couldn’t do that…you had no right to... “S-Sorry…” You whispered getting his attention once more. “I-I didn’t mean to offend you in any way—”

    “Stop,” He breathed interrupting your mumbles.

    “Wha-What?” Your own breath hitched in a small whisper.

    “Look [f/n],” He turned once more towards you with a sad yet supportive gaze and smile. “You don’t have to hide the fact if you found someone…someone you like…”

    “W-What!?” Your eyes widened. Was he that dense?

    “It’s okay I think you should go for him,” He smiled small while slowly sitting up before standing up from his spot next to you. Did he really think you had a crush on someone else and not him!? But why? Why won’t he just open his eyes!? His legs started to make way towards the door of the gymnasium but you couldn’t just let him leave things like this!

    Distraught, you quickly stood up and reached for his hand, stopping him in his tracks while you hid your face from his piercing gaze, “K-Koushi…that-that’s not it, that’s not it at all…”

    “W-What?” His arm twitched.

    “You wanted to know what I want, right?” Your eyes started to sting. “What I really want…”

    “Yeah…” His voice turned quiet.

    “What I w-want…” You hesitated the stinging in your eyes worsening. You couldn’t do it…it was just too hard for you to utter those simple words. “I-I…”

    “…” He waited patiently.

    “I-I just want…” You gulped down your lump and withheld your words. “I just want to be able to help you, you and the team…”

    “Really?” His voice sounded relieved. “That’s what you meant?”

    “Y-Yeah,” You lied. You can’t tell him yet…

    “Oh alright,” He gently took back his arm from your grasp only to smile small at your figure. “Well you can stop by some of our practices if you want…”

    “Yeah…”

    “I’m not sure what you could do to help but,” He rubbed his neck. “I’m sure we can find something if you’re that willing.”

    “Y-Yeah…” You bite your tongue trying to hold back your tears. You were so close to confessing but you stood back and lied to him. You lied to him. Why can’t you just admit it? It’s not that hard…or so you thought…

    “Well I suppose I’ll see you tomorrow [f/n],” He simply stated taking a small step away from you.

    Another step lost…

    “Yeah, I-I’ll see you tomorrow Koushi,” You fought with your tears, you were on the verge of letting them go.

    “Right, I’ll see you,” He simply nodded and gave a small wave before walking off leaving you in the dark under the brightly lit night sky. Finally alone, you let your tears go. You let them stream down your flushed cheeks and cried up into the sky. You couldn’t reach him! No matter how hard you tried, no matter how much you wanted to reach him you couldn’t… He was just too far already… Crying hard, you leaned your head back allowing your blurry gaze to watch the starry night and cried out once more. You just can’t contain it anymore… It’s too hard for you to bare alone…

    Alone…

    If I only cold reach closer…

    Then I wouldn’t be alone…

    So alone…

    Reaching up and out to the sky, you slowly quieted down to some whimpering here and there and watched the sky as each star gave off a brilliant light. You yearned nothing more than to be with Suga, nothing… Not even the hand that is reaching for your outstretched hand could stop your yearning. Wait…hand? Bringing your slightly blurred gaze down, you found yourself staring back at his lightly matt hair whisking in the wind but that’s not what captivated your glance. It was his eyes, they were lit with so much love and compassion and understanding. The warmth from them were so intense it left you in a sobbing mess while words spluttered out of your quivering mouth.

    “K-Koushi?” You stuttered while his hand brought down your own. “W-What are you—?”

    “You aren’t reaching hard enough,” His voice was a mere whisper while his gaze stared at the ground leaving a shadow over his eyes.

    “Wha-What?”

    “Please,” His eyes found your teary ones while his voice tensed up. “Don’t give up…not yet.”

    “K-Koushi…?”

    “Not while I’m reaching for you,” He confessed tugging on your linked hands bringing you closer to him. “I lied to you before when you asked what I wanted well I don’t want to be just friends anymore…” You could feel his breath against your skin.

    I’m reaching closer…

    His eyes closed just as your foreheads touched while a small smile formed on his lips before he utter something you thought he would never say

     “I want you [f/n], I yearn for you…”

    The stars that hover…

    Finally…

    “That is what I want, what I truly want,” His words tickled your lips.

    “I-It is?” You croaked, tears were already spilling from your eyes.

    “Yes…” He breathed.

    Finally.

    “Please somebody tell me this is real…” You sobbed happily before wrapping your trembling arms around his strong neck as his own arms wrapped around your waist while his lips twitched into a smile more dazzling than before that grazed against your own.

    “It is real, more real than you could ever imagine…” He murmured against your lips. But you didn’t want them to just graze anymore… Smiling, you closed the small gap between you both, kissing him gently and entangled your fingers into his haloing hair while his arms tightened around your small body. His lips moved with yours until the need for oxygen was too great leaving you two to part with looks of admiration and love.

    Smiling, you gently caressed his cheeks with your slender hands as some more tears threatened to spill over as you uttered the words you held back for so long, “I love you Koushi, with all of my heart and soul…”

    Immediately his eyes brightened up at your loving words before his lips crashed against yours once more before whispering the things you wanted to hear for a very long time, “I love you to [f/n]…even more so than volleyball…”

    Smiling big, you snuggled into the crook of his neck while his gentle fingers circled the small of your back under the starry night sky.

    I reached him…

    I finally reached for my star…

    If I only cold reach closer…

    Then I wouldn’t be alone…

    Reaching up and out to the sky, you slowly quieted down to some whimpering here and there and watched the sky as each star gave off a brilliant light. You yearned nothing more than to be with Suga, nothing… Not even the hand that is reaching for your outstretched hand could stop your yearning. Wait…hand? Bringing your slightly blurred gaze down, you found yourself staring back at his lightly matt hair whisking in the wind but that’s not what captivated your glance. It was his eyes, they were lit with so much love and compassion and understanding. The warmth from them were so intense it left you in a sobbing mess while words spluttered out of your quivering mouth.

    “K-Koushi?” You stuttered while his hand brought down your own. “W-What are you—?”

    “You aren’t reaching hard enough,” His voice was a mere whisper while his gaze stared at the ground leaving a shadow over his eyes.

    “Wha-What?”

    “Please,” His eyes found your teary ones while his voice tensed up. “Don’t give up…not yet.”

    “K-Koushi…?”

    “Not while I’m reaching for you,” He confessed tugging on your linked hands bringing you closer to him. “I lied to you before when you asked what I wanted well I don’t want to be just friends anymore…” You could feel his breath against your skin.

    I’m reaching closer…

    His eyes closed just as your foreheads touched while a small smile formed on his lips before he utter something you thought he would never say

     “I want you [f/n], I yearn for you…”

    The stars that hover…

    Finally…

    “That is what I want, what I truly want,” His words tickled your lips.

    “I-It is?” You croaked, tears were already spilling from your eyes.

    “Yes…” He breathed.

    Finally.

    “Please somebody tell me this is real…” You sobbed happily before wrapping your trembling arms around his strong neck as his own arms wrapped around your waist while his lips twitched into a smile more dazzling than before that grazed against your own.

    “It is real, more real than you could ever imagine…” He murmured against your lips. But you didn’t want them to just graze anymore… Smiling, you closed the small gap between you both, kissing him gently and entangled your fingers into his haloing hair while his arms tightened around your small body. His lips moved with yours until the need for oxygen was too great leaving you two to part with looks of admiration and love.

    Smiling, you gently caressed his cheeks with your slender hands as some more tears threatened to spill over as you uttered the words you held back for so long, “I love you Koushi, with all of my heart and soul…”

    Immediately his eyes brightened up at your loving words before his lips crashed against yours once more before whispering the things you wanted to hear for a very long time, “I love you to [f/n]…even more so than volleyball…”

    Smiling big, you snuggled into the crook of his neck while his gentle fingers circled the small of your back under the starry night sky.

    I reached him…

    I finally reached for my star…
