This is very interesting and beatiful! Is this based on photos that you have added together along with painting with GIMP? I think that I recognize the "lense effect" or whatever it might be in English (my gimp is in my native language ). Since you told this is the first time you use gimp here are some advice, I have had many happy moments with following stuff and therefore I am eager to share the tips I've learned (even though you didn't ask for advice and you probably already know these tips xD):Another nice light effect is "supernova", if you ever need a bright star or even a sun in your picture, it might help. The curves are an exellent way for manipulating the contrast and colour. Something I love is "shading and brightening" whatever it is in English, it is just so nice to get shadows and lighten the bright parts with it ^^ Then a way to rescue a bit unsharp photos is "unsharp mask", found in the selection somewhere near the blurring effects (maybe in a place called "enhance"?). And if you want to know how to make raining or snowing effect, just ask Ps. I just love the style of this picture, it is very unique and indeed interesting!

Thank you so much! I did look at a photo of a snowy landscape, but I drew, colored and shaded this, using gimp for effects. Took me a LOT longer than I'd like to admit. And thank you so much for the tips!!! I joined Deviantart mainly to force myself to continue doing art and improving my own ability. And yep, that is the Lens Flare effect. I was pretty pleased with this first effort.... There's a lot to learn in Gimp. I'm so glad you like this! comments like yours can really brighten an artist's day!

The result of your hard work is really worth it, since this is so beautiful! ^^ This work gave me some ideas how to utilize the lense effect with those "extra circles", too: usually I just try to get rid of them but now I realized that they can also be really cool Now that you mentioned it, being on dA really has encouraged me to do art with different styles and I think I have developed my skills (mostly with digital art: before joining I didn't even know how great things you can do with digital painting etc.) There's a lot to learn in GIMP, indeed, for me, too!
