I love whers...although I've never quite figured out why...They're a pern critter, a sort of failed attempt of a genetically altered dragon...I can't remember what they were suppose to do...but basically they didn't turn out as expected.
They're short little fat thingies xD with stubby useless wings, limited intelligence, and the inability to see during the day due to heat vision...so basically they're chained to a post and used as night guard dogs
She looks quite happy though xD

In Dragonsdawn Anne says that Wind Blossom tried to make night flying dragons (because at they time the colonists weren't certain if Thread also fell at night) and the Whers were the result.

Whers: photophobic (aka highly allergic to light because it hurts their eyes), used as watch dogs at Holds, trouble detectors in mines... btw I love anything Pern having to do with the dragons, so course my fave is dragons, but I also like the whers & firelizards *almost* as much...

Yay! Whers! I have a character who the handler of a blue wher, they do search and rescue for their craft and weyr and I just love their little foibles.

bwaaah, it's horribly late now, but I do believe I read about the watch-whers being able to fly at night, when the air pressure changes. The heat-vision allows them to pick up the thread signature when normal dragons would be incapable of seeing it, and I forget if they flame the thread, or eat it. But, they watch the skies for thread at night. I don't remember what book that was in.

Oo, I remember those guys! 'tis a shame they were always overlooked in favour of the fancier thread fighting dragons. Goofy, homely, flightless dragons are oddly likable, I'd totally take 'em home :3

Firelizards are awesome...but I have the inability to draw them for some reason...I love the brown and bronze ones though... *might try again oneday*
