I'm loving how as they are asleep, every single one of them radiates their own aura. No matter their goals or ways to achieve them, they are human after all. They are a solid wall in a sense.
Doomfist shows how much of a protector he actually is. Not only does he keep Sombra safely in place, he also makes sure Moira's pillow doesn't fall down. He's obviously asleep, but he looks more in deep, relaxing meditation than truly asleep. If anything would come near his protégés, he'd be the first to notice and make sure it stays at a distance. He could stand on his own, like steel, but that would completely waste his potential. He's the rebar steel of their wall.
Sombra tells us how much she's aching for some refuge. Awake, she's untouchable, flawless, perfect. It's not a complete lie. She's really really good at what she's doing, but everybody runs out of energy sometime. Even if your power is limitless, there is always the element of randomness, always a chance you direct your energy into the wrong way. She wants some of those holes in her guard covered, and she cannot do them by herself, because she is unable to see them. So what she is looking for is somebody else to help her out. Be it the teddy bear to fight the demons, or being in the middle of everybody as her physical shield. She's the definition of a glass cannon: impressively skilled, but with a fragile shell. She's what gives their wall a sense, a reason to be. What happens to the strongest wall in the middle of nowhere? It's going to be torn down to make room for something new, but with her, they have a reason to exist.
Reaper wants to be the one everybody builds on, but there is a big difference between being a foundation, and being buried. He lead Overwatch once. He took the dirty work - which needed doing anyway - and did it himself, so others did not need to do it. He got demoted for it, but still got the chance to be in charge of something. He does not need to be the sole foundation, as Doomfist is forming the other half of this construct, but he's an important part. Being in charge does not only mean being on top. His head is above everybody else. Being in charge also means keeping everybody together, as he does with his arms, and giving everybody solid ground to be on, which can not be seen, but it's obvious that everybody is laying on his legs. Only when Overwatch started basically mocking him and Blackwatch, that's when he snapped. He did not feel like people were taking his shoulders to stand on, he felt like they were trampling on him, like grass. Grass on the ground keeps mud from soiling your boots, but if it's gone you are just a little annoyed. It's not essential. With Talon, people finally gave him the feeling to be a worthy foundation to build on, and so he can sleep peacefully. The foundation of every wall strong are bricks and concrete.
Widowmaker desperately looks for peace, mostly in her head. Shielded by the others, even if just for a night, she can lower her guard a little, recharging her batteries. Obviously she is not ready to lower her walls completely, as is evident with her scarf, but she leaves her arms out. At least some comfort feels safe enough. She also covers another part of Sombra that way. She might not have what it takes to form the outer wall, but that is not needed. There's a guy behind her for the coarse work. She's better suited to find the little cracks and patch those up. Bricks form the most visible part of a wall, but without the mortar, they just fall apart with the next wind. It's just that mortar can become brittle, and that's the balance act for her. That's why she let go of her emotions. At night however, they come back, and in between the bricks and the steel she can safely keep herself mixed just in the ideal ratio of cold rationale and soft safety.
And then there's Moira. She seems out of place at first, like an attachment, the fifth wheel. But neither does she seem discontent, nor is she being rejected. Why else would Akande hold the pillow for her? Why else would Gabriel offer his legs for her to lean on? Why has Amélie obviously put her legs somewhere, where they wouldn't poke Moira in her back? Moira is the embodiment of the seemingly paradox concept of staying at a distance, but not losing contact. She is separate from the wall, but is not at the same time. The reason for this paradox is simply, that it's only like that on the outside, but on the inside, she's the difference between a crude wall you put up on the cheap, and a really strong one from the same materials. Everybody can stack bricks with some steel in the middle and glue it all together with some mortar, then call it a house, but Moira brings the knowledge, the engineering of how you put everything together in a way, so it's forming the strongest bond possible. If you walk past some old church from hundreds of years ago, you only see the material, but if you take a while and think about it, you notice how it's actually extremely remarkable how a building has managed to survive everything for over five hundred years. Moira is an integral part of the wall, but enjoys staying outside of the immediate field of view. She strives to keep everybody together on a logical, intellectual level. In the game, she's in the support role, and that's perfectly shown here. Supports rarely do the work to the outside world, they don't add, they multiply to what's already there. In turn, the team shows gratitude by respecting her wish to be independent, but not separate.
I love it when a piece of art sends you on a voyage, creating an image of many more dimensions than just the two pictured on the screen. Thank you.
P.S. I love how Reaper's neck looks like the steroids he's on went overboard, and made it just YUUGE!
