This tutorial has been a huge help. Do you know where I could get the stamp you used to make the border on this spaulder? I've searched on tandy, but they dont seem to have that shape, and I'm very fond of it.

Kiltedninja In reply to dwooden3 [2012-10-21 07:24:02 +0000 UTC]

tandy does still carry it, it is the tri-weave stamp. lemme look for it....here it is! [link]
i love this pattern <3

Thanks for the reply! I was actually wondering about the one you used for just the border though. The one thats kind of rainbow shaped. I searched tandy's whole gallery and couldnt find one like it

judostud1813 In reply to Kiltedninja [2011-11-16 21:54:56 +0000 UTC]

thanks; i improvised a bit, used an old belt instead of making a strap. I also used Chicago screws instead of rivets; much easier to install and put together. The only way anyone would be able to tell is if they flipped it over. But thank you for the tutorial!

No problem. I will be taking time this winter break between semesters to make more tutorials. Like I said, it's been a while since I put any new work up. that itself is almost 3 years old now haha gotten better since then. plus I have a huge commission for making a full outfit, so you'll see WIP of that and I might make parts of that tutorials.

thaks a lot for this tutorial, Im not exactly thinking about making a spaulder, but I might in the future, I just have one tiny and pretty stupid question... where do I buy leather? can I find it in Michael's? os a hardware store? pleease I need to know > <

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kiltedninja In reply to ESV [2010-11-27 19:37:07 +0000 UTC]

The leather you will need is called vegetable tanned leather (the regular skin colored kind), it can be bought or ordered from Tandy Leather [link] The kind I would suggest to use would be 8-9oz.

ESV In reply to Kiltedninja [2010-11-28 04:52:35 +0000 UTC]

aren't there any stores u can get leather, I can't buy stuff online. I know it sucks :/

It's tutorials like these that take my worry out of trying leather craft. I hope to do something like this soon, thanks for the tutorial....and that is one freaky pinecone. The ones around here don't look like that.

Thank you for having this tutorial, it really took away a lot of my fears with making a spaulder. ='D Oh, but I was wondering if you have any tips with molding leather.

Happy spaulder making!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kiltedninja In reply to Marshintire [2010-04-29 05:20:27 +0000 UTC]

soak it in a sink with HOT water for 15 mins or so. I find it molds easily and dries harder. It also depends on the thickness of the leather, the thinner the more mold-able.
Thanks for the comp, I'm putting more tutorials up soon for other similar projects

Scoobytheoriginal [2009-04-06 08:32:29 +0000 UTC]

Just one question.
You say 8/9 oz leather, but how thick is it (in mm)?
To order leather, I need to choose between different thickness's...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kiltedninja In reply to Scoobytheoriginal [2009-04-06 08:49:27 +0000 UTC]

hm, I'd say 3mm, 4 might be a little too thick and a little tougher to work with, but it would deff make good armour. You could always get 4mm and just mod the tutorial and upgrade some of the hardware to make it more heavy duty. If I was making this for battle readiness I would, though this is a functional piece.
Glad you like it, hope it explains enough for you. Feel free to ask any questions.
