Description

I almost gave up on this picture due to its age and also… eeeeh I really don’t like drawing backgrounds. Especially those that include a lot of rock and water, I honestly don’t know how to do them. I still don’t but I suppose by trial and error I will eventually learn how to pull it off correctly.

Cornwall and Brittany are in a river in search of the famous “Salmon of Knowledge” (in Irish “Bradán Feasa”) that they heard Ireland mention in some of his tales. You see, you take a bite of this fish and you shall have all the knowledge of the world and the universe at your disposal. It’s a rather attractive idea to gain all that knowledge, so these two little Brythonic Celts are trying their luck in catching the salmon. Brittany is reminding Cornwall that just because he caught a bigger salmon than hers doesn’t mean that the bigger salmon is the Salmon of Knowledge.

I guess they didn’t hear the part of Ireland’s story about how the Salmon of Knowledge was caught centuries ago and it was an Irish mythical hero who was the first to taste it by burning his thumb on it (while he was cooking the fish). Thus he was able to gain access to all the knowledge by putting his thumb in his mouth. So this hero, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, could be technically called a thumb-sucking hero. Well there has been some debate whether Fionn had to just put his thumb in his mouth or had to touch a molar with his thumb to get to the knowledge. Either way, Brittany and Cornwall haven’t clued in to the fact that the salmon they’re looking for is long gone.

Hope you like it!

I love it~ Their expression are the best and I like the background too.
The tale is very interesting, never heard about it before. At first I felt pity (and amusement)  about that whole thumb thing but I guess it was better that way? I mean, that way Fionn could just turn in on when he wanted. Having all the world's knowledge for whole time could drive him nuts |D

Aah thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment!! I'm happy that you like their expressions and the background, I've always struggled a bit with the backgrounds. The story is not an extremely famous one but it has its charm and it is one of my favourite stories. ^^ Yeah I think Fionn is pretty lucky that he can switch all that knowledge on and off, that way he doesn't get overwhelmed by all of it. It would come in handy when taking tests, pop your thumb in when you don't know the answer and pass the test with flying colours.

I have to admit I still can't stop staring at Cornwall's face xD
That would be so awesome, no more studying and all! ... But I'm not so sure if it would work. I mean, what if the answer you needed would just get lost in the flow of useless knowledge? D:

He does have a cute face, doesn't he? XD I do think the ability to have all the knowledge would come along with a sense to narrow down and find the exact answer, though realistically you would be overwhelmed by all the knowledge. ;w; Still, it would be cool to have all the knowledge of the world. Then through mental training you could learn to focus on the information you're looking for.

Ah, this is really cute! ;v; I like how you did the backgruond!
That's a pretty interesting legend, though, I'd sure love to take a bite of that fish xD Then again, there must be a few downsides about having all that knowledge--

Why thank you!! I'm really happy to read that you like the background, it gave me some trouble towards the end.
Wouldn't everyone love to have all the knowledge of the world at our disposal whenever we wanted? I certainly wouldn't mind it! Hmm actually I don't think I know of any legend where Fionn's knowledge was seen as a bad thing, it seemed to be more of a reason for odd stories to happen. Like there was one story where Fionn's enemy tricked Fionn and a few friends to sit on the ground and threw an enchantment to keep them stuck to the ground. I don't remember the details exactly, but Fionn stuck his thumb in his mouth and then told his friends that they needed a traitorous king to be brought to them, killed, and the blood smeared on their bodies to become unstuck. There was one friend who hadn't sat down and was able to move around, so he was tasked with doing that and freeing the others. There wasn't enough blood left for one friend so they had to cut him free and... well poor guy spent the rest of his life being nicknamed Bottomless. *cough* A lot of Irish tales were a bit strange like that.

You're welcome! Ah, that's true--  I meant that "ignorance is bliss" thing, since there probably are a few stuff we wouldn't really want to know TT7TT Oh boy, that's a pretty strange story indeed, I feel sorry for the guy

Very true, ignorance is a better option in some cases. Sometimes having too much of a good thing doesn't always work out for the best. Irish and Welsh legends are very entertaining and their bizarre concepts and ideas make some of them very memorable! (between us I think Welsh legends have more strange ideas but as a result, they do stick around more)

Haha, that's true xD Well, they sure sound entertaining considering this one  (Really? I don't think I've ever heard a Welsh legend, but they do sound pretty memorable! >u<)

Aaaah thank you so much!

It's not the most popular legend in Ireland but it's a tale that I really enjoy, it has a bit of a funny part to it too. It was actually Fionn's mentor who caught the salmon after years of hunting for it but he ordered Fionn to cook the fish and not eat it. Everything went fine before Fionn decided to pop a fat bubble that was forming on the salmon and burnt his thumb in the process. He automatically stuck his thumb in his mouth to soothe it and from that action gained all the knowledge of the world. His mentor must have felt extremely dumb when he came back.

Oh wow, the concept of knowing everything in the world really is an attractive thought I'd be worshipped in school. Yess, bow down to me . But then again, there's some things that I'd rather not want to know XD There's still the downsides to that.

They're both so adorable in this picture. But ughhhhhh Cornwall <3 he's such a little cutie

I think many people in school would be tempted to have all the knowledge of the world so that they can do all their homework and pass tests with no effort at all. But true, it might not always be the best to have access to all the knowledge... as we sometimes say, ignorance is bliss? XP

Why thank you so much, it makes me seriously happy that you like Cornwall so much!! Thank you!

I think that I'd also like to have some challenges in life and experience learning things XD
Dang though... I wish I had knowledge to help me get an excellent grade in Physics class lol. I feel like my efforts in that class are never enough

That's literally my whole experience with Chemistry. I got a tutor, stayed after hours with my Chemistry teacher, studied and practiced constantly... despite my best efforts I still failed Chemistry when I graduated from school. Physics and Chemistry were my arch enemies in school, never understood them very well and no matter how much I tried I never got good grades. Glad that I don't really have to deal with them anymore! ^^
