Way before the conception of Moana, I always thought if Disney ever adapted the myths of Maui, I thought they would make him look like a pretty boy like Aladdin, Hercules, and the other Disney Princes.

The funny thing is this is both accurate and inaccurate to the Mythology from which Muai hails. As the story goes that the was born quite hideous, but married a beautiful woman... And jealous of her beauty he stole her face. So...

The whole 'stole her face' thing was an extremely obscure myth that only seems to be attributed to a dictionary written in the 1890s, and never appears in books written by Polynesians themselves. So... the fact that every other myth in Polynesian mythology agrees on Maui being an attractive, lithe youth on the cusp of manhood, should speak great volumes.

I absolutely love this because it's a lot more realistic to his mythology than what they did in the movie, and in this design he lacks that 'round-mentor-not-a-love-interest' look. Not that I dislike Maui's movie appearance but I would have liked a design similar to this a lot more, because it would have made the movie a lot better to him look like this and then have Moana and him part ways a nothing more than friends, because it would show that not every Disney girl hooks up with the hot guy.

It's funny because in Polynesian Mythology, Maui is a skinny, handsome lithe teenager on the verge of manhood. Not someone who looks like Hercules and body builders.
Disney obviously couldn't have him look like that in the movie otherwise people would think that he was Moana's love interest.
*Sighs* Would it really be too much effort to make a movie, especially a Disney movie, with a female lead and an attractive [and mythologically accurate] male deuteragonist and only keep them as friends? I mean it would send a great message to kids.

I actually have a Tahitian-Australian friend named Angel, and after she watched the movie with me she said, "As much as I am happy that they've finally made a Polynesian themed Disney movie, it's kinda sad knowing that while Polynesian girls like me have Moana to look up to, Disney has given boys this adaption of Maui, I don't mind the fact that he is Moana's sidekick or the fact that he's humorous, but you'd think that after they formed a trust fund to ensure Moana herself was culturally accurate, they'd at least make Maui accurate too, especially knowing that he already has a set image description in our mythology."

Ich finde die Version ist eine spannende Alternative. Wäre Moana anstelle eines Disney-Films ein Anime, wäre deine süße, kindliche Moana an der Seite des sexy Bishi-Maui über die Meere gesegelt - passt doch!
... auch wenn ich mir einen sexy Maui mehr wie seinen originalen Synchronsprecher vorstellen würde 8D *fangirl*
