It's a marimo (moss ball). You can actually buy it at pet stores. Easiest(?) pet, I think.

I have heard that they grow really slowly. People have bought some the size of a pea and to get them around the size of a marble almost takes two years. That's why they are so protected in Japan.

The one I bought fits int the palm of my hand and looks like it'll be slightly smaller than a tennis ball.
