(Somewhere in Chapter 4)...

Sure enough there she was, sat curled up near the edge of the beach as she continued to shiver from the cold. He didn’t know if he wanted to yell at her for putting him through this, or to cry his eyes out as he held her but, more than anything… he was still afraid. He didn’t know if she would welcome his comfort or shrink away from it.

He didn’t say a word as he moved slowly to sit next to her, and summoned forth his wings to shield her from the rain. He startled her when she lifted her head, she didn’t even know he was there until she felt something protecting her from the rain. She couldn’t stop trembling; her lips looked, so, blue as her teeth chattered.

“D-Damion… w-why are you h-here?” she asked through chattering teeth.

“Why did you run off?” he asked her in a voice that was supposed to sound intimidating but, instead came out more as a plea. He bowed his head low as he clenched his fists, waiting for her answer. She didn’t answer as she laid her head back on her knees.

“Say something.” The silence was starting to become too much for the demon.

She gripped her arms tighter. "Why?... Why d-didn’t you tell me, he was going to die?” Her whole body shook, half from cold and half from breaking down into sobs, again.

His gaze looked out at the vast pitch, black ocean. “... I was afraid of losing my only friend, because of what I truly am, and what I had to do.”

This time she raised her head and looked at him, as her tears mixed in the rain. He hated that look on her face but, knew he deserved it. What he didn’t deserve was the looks she gave him that made him feel like he could be more than what he was.

“I’m not the hero that saves the day Sophie; I am a soul collector, a demon of darkness and death. I can never be the knight in shining armor in your eyes... and I was foolish to think that I could be.” He clenched his jaw, and looked back down at his hands. His words touched Sophie as she watched him. He looked so defeated, so ashamed of what he was, and all he ever wanted was for one person to accept who and what he is. ‘He doesn’t want to be alone anymore, just like me.’ How could she not have thought about his pain, when all he ever did was to make her happy? She couldn’t hate him for everything he’d done, when all he asked was to not be feared.

“No, Damion... You’re not my knight in shining armor.” She watched as his head lowered a bit more, and knew she had to finish telling him how she saw him. She gave him a half smile and whispered “... You’re my dark warrior, and I wouldn’t change anything about you.” She scooted closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. She could feel his whole body jump at the contact, as he looked down at her with a look of disbelief.
