Description Acrylics on canvas board, 41x33cm

Fullview strongly recommended.

The title comes from the novel "Perdido Street Station" by China MiΓ©ville. "The fractured land hypothesis" is the name of a scientific theory that someone mentions in passing somewhere in the novel. I always liked that expression, and when I was working on this painting, I remembered it again. It was my working title to begin with, and it stuck all through the end.

If I remember correctly, the expression referred to a kind of alternate universe theory in the novel, which is interesting since the novel is set in a different universe from ours (it could be described as fantasy, but that wouldn't do it justice).

I created the textures first by applying a thickish layer of gesso on the canvas board, and using a thick brush to push the stuff around so it formed ridges and other formations. Then, I applied several layers of paint until I could get the colours the way I wanted them. It took me about a month to finish this.

Didn't care for the book... but I really like the painting. Makes me want to reach out and run my hand over the textures

Thanks for the comment. Looks like I achieved my goal, then. I didn't want the painting to be too dependent on the book. Just took one idea and turned it into an image.

it is beautiful! the colours & texture work, so rich & fantastic. Remarkable to begin with a title, I must try that.
it would be a different approach for me, especially for something abstract..

Thank you so much! I really wanted this to work and so I re-did it a couple of times to get it just right, even though it was really frustrating at times. Worth it, though!

Starting with the title was a new approach for me, as well, but it's definitely worth trying. Sometimes a phrase will just get stuck in my head, and I think I finally found a way to make use of that.

Cool. Is the nature of the alternate universe described in the novel?

Thanks, unfortunately the concept is only mentioned in passing in the novel. But there's another novel by the same author that's set in the same fantasy world, and it explores the concept of alternate universes in more depth. "The Scar" is the name of the novel, and it's also the name of a geographical location that acts as a gateway/barrier between universes. Fascinating book, as well.
