Description

Hey everyone...

I don't do much for landscapes so I wanted some feedback on this one please~ It's pretty different from my other work.

I wanted to know what you thought about the lighting and the silhouettes. Are there too many? Should I just focus on the tree or is it okay to have the bushes in there too?

Is the lighting and the streamy clouds distracting?

thanks for stopping by!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dunno if this counts as landscapes... but.... ^^

I like it! very nice lighting, composition, I like the silhouettes of the trees at the bottom very much, they add interest, although it does feel alittle crowded?

I love the shape of the tree, it looks as if it's drilling into the sky, I just wish there was less darkness near the top of the tree. I think you should hang it up side down so the light is at the top and it looks to be drilling down to darkness.

My photography is a little rusty but, the single tree in the center creates a good focal points, and I like that the other trees are smaller. However, I think it would look better if you took the photo when the sun was behind the top of the tree. The eye is drawn to where the sun is and right now thats just the trunk of the tree. Keep working on it you've got the right idea

I like the sun and silhouettes, I think the just pull the eye to the tree. Though the clouds in the background are going two different ways, so it looks kinda like a weave of clouds.
The bushes at the bottom are good, it puts a base on the picture, I think.

Wonderfully done!

I do enjoy how tall and thin the tree silhouette is Nor is the trunk perfectly straight, which adds a lot to the asymmetry of the picture. I like the position of the sun as well and how it's peeking out from behind the tree as well. ^^ It stinks the sun couldn't have been a tad higher, I think it would have been interesting to see the sun at a higher point in the sky. I can tell this took some planning though, and it shows.

This is a beautiful picture, really. I can't think of anything that could have been done better in this shot.

I've always been a fan of dark silhouettes back lit with the sun. You really did a fantastic job capturing such a stark image of this tree. The other trees behind and below also has a neat effect, and well positioned in the frame. They don't obstruct the image of the tree at all, like they could if not positioned right.

Like I said, can't think of anything bad, great work and keep it up!

actually, this is really good, you can actually add to what the tree might look like.

The tree gives the feeling that a hand is trying to reach out for the skies, if you look close enough you might be able to figure out some of the shapes you can make out of it, like a hand.

the sun also adds to the lightning.

I love how the tree's trunk/base is the focus and how the clouds flow up and into the darker part of the sky. The bottom of the picture looks a bit overcrowded but it looks natural and beautiful. The colors bring out the dark shade of the tree, so I wouldn't, in any way, change the lighting.

For one who doesn't take many landscapes, you took a perfect picute.

I think the silhouettes are fine. With the sun in the background, it's really appealing and meshes well with the picture. The shadows really give the picture contrast, which is always good to have in a picture. I think you cropped this well, too. The focus is on the main tree, and I don't find the bushes at the bottom terribly distracting. I would suggest blurring them so more focus is on the tree.

Also, the lighting and lovely clouds in the background are not distracting at all. They give this piece a final touch, and without them, I don't think the picture would be nearly as interesting as it is.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

I really liked the clouds (hehe it was a lucky day!) but someone had mentioned that it took away from the tree just before I posted it. So I figured I would get a vote ^^

Would I be able to blurr the bushes with any old photo editing program like Picassa? That's all I have ;

Thanks again!

SneakDevilRomes In reply to KiwiKassa [2009-11-21 18:00:41 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.

With Picasa, there's a feature called "Soft Focus." When you click on it, it should give you some options for "size" and "amount". Size is how big of a ring you want blurred; amount is how much or little blur you want. You also have the ability to move the area of focus which is shown by a green + in the middle of the picture. In a case like this picture, I would put the focus on the tree, push the "size" all the way to the right so it has the biggest radius. I would then push the "amount" all the way to the left. This will make it to where only the edges and the bushes would be blurred. The blurred edges won't be too noticeable because of the clouds .

I hope this helps!

For someone who doesn't do much with landscape, you've taken a beautiful photograph.

The entire overall photo is beautiful, with the tree standing tall in the middle and the gorgeous colors in the clouds. The lighting is perfect, don't mess with it. As for the silhouettes, I think it seems just a bit busy at the bottom, but that could add to the overall effect of the piece. Personally, I think it's a bit too crowded. The only other thing I would suggest would be sharpening it a bit more.

Other than that, this is gorgoues

I think this piece is extremely beautiful. I find natural images to be extremely encouraging in this day and age of technology.

Question One:
Are there too many silhouettes and is it okay to have the bushes in the back?
No I don't think that there are too many silhouettes. Because the tree is so large and cuts through the prominent light source it remains the focal point. I actually think the bushes frame the image in a way.

Question Two:
Is the lighting and streamy clouds distracting?
No. To continue the last thought. The light source is very close to the bushes. Now I think this works because the extreme dark and light contrast looks awesome. I also find it nice that the sky fades dramatically to a nice dark blue color at the top. That helps with the "framing".

See I don't think any of it is distracting. The colors are simple enough that the more complex details are not over bearing. After all, nature is not so simple.

This is beautiful work. Definitely keep it up.

This looks really cool as a portrayal of light and dark. The silhouette and beautiful sky are really quite breathtaking.

My idea that would make this unbelievably amazing (in my mind) would be if you could somehow edit out the tops of the other trees and crop this picture so that the spot where the trunk fades into light is the end of the picture. I think that would be so cool, and also the conflicting deciduous trees on the horizon are a bit distracting.

Even if that idea's not possible on this piece, it's just something to keep in mind. Great shot!

reading other critiques, i have to mention one thing: I like the white of the border, but i do agree that the white should be thinner to emphasize the picture more.

my own thoughts:
this shot is amazing. I love the silhouette and definetly do not the bushes are "too much". Since the trees are entirely black, the streaks of cloud add some other texture that makes this image quite appealing. and yes, it is definetly a landscape

I had actually planned not to leave any feedback on any deviation today, but I was so in love with this shot that I just have to!

The crop is perfect. It is stretching, like the tree, but the fact that you included the silhouettes of the bushes makes the shot feel "grounded". (in a good way ) it gives the eyes a vantage point and makes them follow the tree upwards, via the sun, to the great softness of the clouds and the blue sky getting darker by the top of the tree. It all feels so "complete"!

The lighting is not distracting to me. In fact, it is what makes this shot work. A silhouette is boring without a gorgeous lighting behind it. The only thing I would like to see improved is the sky at the top. It feels a bit too dark to me and outline of the top of the tree is a bit hard to make out.

all in all, it's beautiful, serene and I'd have it on my wall. Nice work!
