I have never seen the anime to be honest. The most I've seen is parts of the movies and the first episodes of the new show (the show I very soon dropped because of the lack of quality, it's disgusting)

go for the 1997 anime it's a lot better in my opinion, though it only sticks with the Golden Age Arc (which sadly even though a lot had to be cut out but the creator of Berserk also allowed said cuts were made due to budget) not to mention the English voice cast has bloopers, can't say no to that 
but hey at least the manga is still on going, and the art looks fantastic

Of course, the manga is the source material and it's the best way to enjoy Berserk. I heard good things about the 97 show, but i think it was because a lot was compared with the shit we have now. It baffles me how someone can fuck up berserk, but the new show is really really bad. The pacing is horrible, the camera is all over the place, they change story elements just because... I'm not someone to complain about the 3D in anime, I'm very open to stuff like what they do in Rebuild of Evangelion, but in Berserk 2016 the animation and the 3d models just look really bad. They even look worse than the Berserk musou! It got me really angry because I love the manga, so I want a show to make it justice. Its good that they are changing directors, but maybe they should change animation studios.... XD

The amount of progression Miura has made in his art over the past 20 or so years is astounding. It really speaks articles about the influence of practice and perseverance!

Honestly, I'm a huge fan of Berserk. If you ever get into it, I say get into everything. The 1997 anime, the golden age arc movies, and the manga last. Gotta save the best for last.
