For the clouds I used the impasto oil brush (impasto brushes are my favorite for backgrounds and especially clouds) and for the horse I mostly used the pastel pencil brush, blended a little bit with the coarse smear brush. This is the basic technique I use with a lot of my paintings. Oh, and the program is Corel Painter.

Ooh cool though my program has none of these XD

they're just the brush and you manually change the edge softness etc.

I'm trying to find a suitable shading technique and brush, right now I use one that doesn't work if I want to improve futher

Yeah, that's the main reason I use Corel and not Photoshop. xD Making brushes from scratch is hard.

I think in the full PS then they have some sort of save brush or color.. forgot XD

to shade do you use opacity or do you just manually keep tuning up and down the color?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it does ... But don't take my word for it-- I'm pretty clueless.

Mmmmm, a combination of both. A surprising amount of colors are needed for shading, but tweaking each color individually would be murder. I do it by blocking in a base color, then loosely painting in the shadows and highlights with a darker and lighter version of that color-- I think typically I set my opacity around 20-35%, so I can control how strong the shadow/highlight is by how hard I press and how many times I go over it. Then I blend, paint in more subtle colors, then blend again, and on like that.

lol I found out I have corel, it's part of my tablet XDDD

but I stick with PSE8 because I'm used to it

About like that, though it's kind of difficult to describe, since it's not really a scientific method. :3 Of course, it really varies from piece to piece. Like, with my last two paintings (Milkyway and Kach, and another I'm just about to upload ) I didn't do any blending at all (except the mane on Milkway). For those I layered different colors of thin pencil strokes at about 25% opacity, one on top of the other, to build up shadows and highlights.
