Description This is one of my favorite Elk photographs from this past Fall and ultimately one of the images which made me decide to pull the trigger on a 500mm lens as I was using a friends when I photographed this.
Displaying battle scars in the form of a bloody mouth from a recent fight with another bull Elk, this big guy looked right at me and let out a bugle. I love these animals and during the annual rut is a great to observe and photograph them. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Amazing shot of a beautiful, majestic animal. I wish I had a 500mm lens but could I hold it and the camera? Did you use a tripod?

For this shot I used what is called a Puffin Pad, it is a beanbag alternative [link]

Thanks for the info. Man the guy using one in the demo photo has a BIG lens. Oh the shots I could get with that...

Ya Maxis is an awesome shooter, one of my fav wildlife photographers. You should check out NatureScapes, it is one of the best sites out there for wildlife/nature photographers, their forums are incredible [link]

Will do. Probably will end up one of my fave spots for pointers. I need 'em. Question: when taking wildlife/bird photos, should I bother to get a "blind"? (some birds don't care if I'm there but most DO. Esp. the ones that seem to know they look like feathered "Eat At Joe" signs. Like cardinals. )

You could, it's up to you and how you shoot; your style of shooting. I don't use one myself but for what it's worth, a car window can make a great blind, hence me using a Puffin Pad for the shot here.
