Hm. That's kind of a broad category, but I'd advise to draw the real thing to start with. It took me years (literally) to finally nail down otters to a point where they actually looked like otters. My first attempts always looked more like dogs or bears. You just gotta keep drawing (from life as much as you can, though photos can also help for study). Even if you get frustrated, keep at it. They say that everyone has a million bad drawings inside of them, and that the faster you get them out, the sooner you'll start getting to the good ones.
Another method that might help (and you should be careful with this) is to find artists that you really like, and copy their drawings as practice. Now, since you're copying you shouldn't put them online... it's strictly for practice and to begin to understand how other people handle the subject. But with that practice you should learn a lot that you can apply to your real drawings.

I know you made Dakkan as a character before Kung Fu Panda, but I think I like him best as a KFP character! He looks so cool, in a kickbutt sort of way. XD

Every time you draw Dak, I love him more. We should draw our otters together somehow. And I fell in love with KFP the first time I saw it, its just so amazing stylistically, the character designs won me over so much. I never would have thought of drawin new characters in the style of it though, this is so brilliant you did. That its dakkan is even better! I think you nailed there style and proportions they seemed to be playing with. I think th only thing you might consider is working in some kind of simple asian design somehow, like on his forehead or body markings? Im thinking of tiger girl especially, she had these subtle spirals even, on her forehead, that made her look move from realism into even more of an illustration even. It was fun. Made it feel so much like a story was coming to life, like it was a legend. But what you've done with Dak is awesome.. and I mean it. Your otter and my Crash together= epic teamup. Art collaboration?
