Description Zeke is back! And he kicks butt smoother than ever!

This is actually a slightly improved version of what I turned in to class this morning (refined some timing an' such since then). Those dog thugs are more animatic than animation right now... may go back and make them better, if I have time. So rather than final, this may be more like "final." Depends on how big my school/time ratio is.

...you know...
it randomly occurred to me that Zeke might actually be at home with the Lackadaisy cats. X) Even though his build is basically my Ninja Turtle design, but slimmer and without a shell. Heh.

This animation was done with paper and pencil, though it was shot using a program called Flipbook. A free equivalent is MonkeyJam, though it only exports AVI files. The good part is they are more flexible AVIs - Quicktime can read them just fine.

I also dabble in Flash when it comes to animation. As far as just graphic programs, I've used ArtRage2 and OpenCanvas too (both have free versions), though my primary program is Photoshop.

OMG!! That was AWESOME!! "It's a talent". That sounds like what one of my chars would say!!! Beating up a bunch of people then showing off!! That was nice work!!! Really that was COOL!

Kobb In reply to ricardoredway [2008-10-20 17:32:11 +0000 UTC]

Because the cat dude is the subject of the animation - there wasn't nearly enough time to fully animate all the characters, so I decided "storyboard panels" on the dog thugs would be better than having him beat up the air.

Besides the pencil and paper I drew it on, there was

* a scanner to scan in the drawings
* Photoshop to line them up, one by one
* Monkeyjam to string the images into an AVI and combine them with the soundclip.

Here am I, poking through your gallery and constantly finding cool stuff I missed while in Ohio. This is so cool! I love the flow and the little 'yes!' gesture at the end. Awesomeness.

Thanks. It's probably one of my best 2D animations I've done at school, though thankfully I think I've gotten better with this Viktor thing I did.

This is nice! Much better than what you normally see on DA. If you decide to rervist this here are some things to work out:

Arc doesn't follow on fist for first punch. The whole action is too fast. Sound makes up for 50% of out understanding of what's going on when it only should add to what we understand (100%) visually. Watch it with the sound off. See? Hold the dog another frame before he flies off. Dog/fist contact seems like it should last 3 drawings. I know the dogs are just blocked in, but..

No antic to jump kick. Hold is good. Keep your timing.

Back doesn't follow through on kick landing. This is why it feels so stiff there. His hips are leading the action. Lumbar should follow, followed by thor then head. Everything stops at the same time (minus the tail.) We also need to see the right arm overshoot and settle back before he stands.

Hands and tail hiccup on your moving hold. It's distracting.

There are no frame numbers so this will be hard to explain. After kick landing, his back is towards us, The two frames where animatic dog's feet are on the ground and when he starts to fall. The cat's right food slides too much. The distance is ok but even it out more because it's popping. It moves it's total distance in 3 drawings. Even out the second or add another after the second.

Besides that all is pretty strong.

Kobb In reply to cat-hicks [2007-03-01 05:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thanks for the in-depth critique! And of course you're 100% right on all of that. The kick landing is botched because I ended up completely reanimating the kick the night before it was due, partially without a light table... That was the main section I wanted to fix, because it didn't hook up to the original ending very well and I had to BS it.

The moving hold bit is especially true, and more evident once I come back to it after a few weeks. Besides that, the other thing I wanted to make better is the beginning... have the cat's reaction to the first thug's approach and maybe have him brace himself before the punch, instead of just sending him straight into it.

Man, I need to be torn to bits like this more often. Again, thanks a lot.

You're a brilliant animator! I'm working on a little somthing to send into my portfolio for animation camp, and it's quiet tedious X) Still, it'sthe end result that makes it all worth while

Great movement here, very impressive knowledge of gravity and how the body moves. Was it hard to animate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to sketchinthoughts [2007-02-09 04:40:08 +0000 UTC]

There's actually a lot of weight issues left in this that I need to work out... but improvements will come later, when I catch up on sleep.

This was actually pretty fun to animate, because I have a better feel for how masses are moving when I'm drawing them out instead of trying to duplicate them on a computer. The first run was a little flat, but when I revamped it to be more dynamic (as far as poses go, at least), I ran into these problems with weight and force that still need to be fixed.

Though when the action is slow and smooth, and I'm still trying to keep it on twos... that means a lot of inbetweens, and that is quite tedious.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sketchinthoughts In reply to Kobb [2007-02-09 04:47:12 +0000 UTC]

I see, animation can be quite a tough process. I drew 10 frames of my animation today, and though it was fun, I was a little confused about how things move. Hopefully this animation camp will help.

Twos may be easier to animate than ones, I'm sure. But much more tedious and long X) But I have confidence that you'll have an amazing animation(though it's already amazing) when you're finished with it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to sketchinthoughts [2007-02-10 01:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Another thing I've done that has probably helped... heck, maybe you do this too, I dunno.

But whenever I'm rewatching anything animated I love, I'm usually watching the animation. If you're ever doing this and you see something and say "wow! That was cool!" or "Hey, that looked really good!" Rewind and go frame-by-frame. Find out why it moved that way, and why that makes it cool to watch. I've been doing this for years, and I think it does help... kinda plants in your subconscious how things should move when you draw them.

That first teaser for the new TMNT movie... watched the whole thing frame by frame. X) Well, both trailers, actually. Fight scenes in general are fun to watch like that. And when Mufasa's running in the stampede and gets nailed by a wildebeest... like three different times... hilarious.

...Well, unless I remember what comes after that. *ruffles his mane*

Yes, I have a tendency to watch the animation over the movie. In Spanish class my teacher put on a movie for us to write down 30 Spanish words we knew, and, it beng animated, I was fa more interested in watching the movie Though, strangely, I don't recall ever slowing the movies down. I probably should though, since even after getting a lot of elp from watching it at normal speed, it's be amazing how good of inspiration you'd have after really seeing how its done

WOW!! I love this! You got it goin' on sis! As you mentioned with the dogs, they're like animatics but very good ones at that. Now, I did notice a drop in framerate when the last one fell down but that could've been my computer to.

Now I'm eager more than ever to see you do a TMNT animated short. Come on... come on, you know you want to.

Over all, very awesome and the timing with the audio was spot on.

Instant fave from the sheer enjoyment I had just from watching it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Ninja-Turtles [2007-02-08 23:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I only had a little time to crank out a few dog drawings just to make sure the cat dude was hitting something other than air. They kinda jump around as placeholders, as I was going more for timing than smooth movement - I put him in the final lying-down position to match the sound of the body hitting the asphalt, etc. Because of this, the framerate is a lot less consistent for the second guy - he needed more drawings than I had time to make.

I was tempted to do a TMNT for this assignment... but then I figured it'd be better if I just made up a character design. Used my basic TMNT structure, though, haha. I definitely do want to do a Turtle animation to a soundclip soon. I can record sounds off DVD now, so I have all kinds of fun 'toon quotes to go through for that.

And thanks.

Yeah, I see what you mean about those dog thugs... but I'm sure they'll look great when they're finished!
Zeke's movement is really smooth there. Realistic and slightly cartoony at the same time.
And the casual way he remarks on his martial art skills as being 'a talent' gives it a touch of comedy, too.
Most impressive! I'd say you have a talent, as well!

My teacher suggested some more cartoony movement for bits of this, and I think they worked out for the better (especially the wind-up for the punch). It's a great line from a fun movie, so yeah... heh. Thanks.
