I'm not cut for patience either, lol

Well, yes, I can describe a few things, though not all because feelings are not that easy to catch
For the lanterns : they are not organised by the paper. They are not on one single line with ordination. And they move.
What I mean : on chibi drawings, often, everything is very organised and straight. Here, the lanterns follow their own patern, tidy and neat if you draw a few mental lines but give an appearance of what you would see in a fun fair.
In other words : nature hates ordination. Only humans need to ordinate and make straight lines.
Your own proper ordination seems very "nature" like though there is still a certain ordination whicjh is not drawn. Therefor, the brain of the viewer will automatically compensate and accept things as ordinated or not. Here, the balance is correct. So, even if their is no ordination meant, in the first place, whilst drawing, you managed to find the proper equilibrium between looking ordinated without showing too much (what is hiden is often quickly understood by our "neural computer".
I tried to simplify what I'm trying to say as I'm not exactly fluent in English... So, if something doesn't make sens to you, just ask, I'll try to explain better...

For the subject :
First : mouvement. Either you have, either you don't. You can't learn it. Obviously, you have it. That's just natural skill and I can't explain it further.
Second : it's far from being "perfect". No triangular, even, fixed smile. The lines are "scribbled", not one perfect line, clear, cutting edge. And THAT's really cool.
When you look at someone moving around, the lines they have are not cutting edge : they move, change, danse with light... Well, obviously, nobody has a outliner in proper life but I believe you get what I mean.
Third : lights and colours. That, you have mastered it. Not much more to say
Fourth : the expression of her eyes and smile. You don't often see, in drawings, that kind of glance or half smile. You get either a broad smile, either a line for the mouth... or any expression wanted, in a rigid state. As if the drawer wants to show something, instead of leaving it to be unraveled.
Here, it's as if the drawing had been captured in course of a smile or talking. It's alive.
Too, the eyes seem a bit closed because of the violent lights, even though the darkness. Very realistic.

All in all, it's as if she just got up from a table to go order something : in the course of talking and smilling, announcing something to other people... Do you capture that instant I'm talking about ? Imagine the scene in real life, with real people, stop time every second to analyse the different faces one could have at that moment... Makes sens ?

Hope it helps, though I'm not that technical

yes, it does help a lot! i am very thankful that you took your time to review this
this is more feedback than i have got in the past few months.
most of the time people comment with a "cute" or "it looks beautiful, i love the colors!" (which i get a lot)
but it doesnt go beyond that. i am happy people like my work, but im even more thankful when i know
where i did right and where not, so i can improve. so really, thank you very much. i really appreciate this.

you pointed out a lot of things i havent thought about and that i just went because i liked how it look
so its really the instant effect that appeals a lot, right? ill try to look into that more
i dont have a good knowledge of notions and generally have always had bad poses
(bad as in, they are not as fluid and in motion as i want them to be, theres always something lacking)

you talked about scribbling. so you thing these types of scribble lines are good, right?
what if you compared "lanterns" to this piece here which is currently my favorite work: be mine?
do you think the lines of be mine are better? or is the lantern one better? what about the coloring

MayLouise In reply to kokotea [2015-04-06 10:22:09 +0000 UTC]

Hi ^^
No probs I love analysing so I can do it all day long, lol And I know the feeling too : it's great that people like, but why ? What appeals to them ? What can I improve ? Or do more often ? Or less...
So, great to be able to help you

The instant effect appeals to me, but it goes beyond that : you were in the mood of what you were drawing and conveyed it perfectly. It's the soul you put in it, leaving technic aside to favor the feeling. That's what makes it so unique.

You can gain fluidity by leaving more fluidness in your hand. Stiff traits come from a too stiff hand (because of the strain to make something clean)
Too much "perfect" just brakes the spell.

In the comparaison with "Be mine", I rather prefer the Lanterns.

First :
it is only my opinion and in no ways say it's bad work. Because it's truely good work... But just less appealing to me. This cleared out...

Why :
I like "Be mine" but it doesn't catch my eye as much. There are a few things which don't fit in perfectly to my eye, for example : too much light effect in the hearts which looses  the attention. I don't know where to fix my comfort zone to look at it. Then, the line of the ribs under the boobs is too close to the round of the boob, or not aligned with the back. At first, it looks like she has little boobs (which is not bad), but then, with the curb of the back, there's just something that looks a bit unequal.
Then, the transparence of the hair. It's well done in itself, at the front of the picture. But why opacify it behind ? It sort of disturbs the continuity...
The feeling I get is that you tried a lot to be very technic about it, which is a goal achieved, no problems on that. But that was at the deficit of continuity and amusement. I can feel you have worked very hard on it and understand why you are so proud But did you really enjoy yourself on it ? Not sure it was as much as the Lanterns... (not saying you didn't enjoy yourself at wall...)
Finally, the colours : I have no hated colour as such (as some do) and I wouldn't be able to make my mind on which colour I have as a favourite (one day it can be dark violet, another one bright pink... all depends of my mood, the season, the weather...). But on this one, it's a tad too pink and red. It looks like it needs another colour to brighten up the scene.
See, in Lanterns, you have the light green that just wakes every thing up, makes the red glow more intensily. I feel a bit crushed by all the pink and red in Be mine.

The major difference in my liking is that Be Mine has too many details that demand focalising, whilst the Lanterns have just the right amount of details to make it comfortable to look at.

Now, all this said, I asked my SO what he thought about both : he's radically opposite to my taste He likes better "Be mine" because for him, the combination of colours and details and technic is close to perfect. He feels a lot of work on it  and appreciates it.
Lanterns, for him, is a bit too much subject to interpretation. He doesn't seize the look on her face and it makes him feel uncomfortable to decrypt. Though he likes it too...

So, you have both looks
And don't forget : even if it's less appealing to me, it doesn't mean I don't like it ! Because I do... Just not as much as the Lanterns.

It's really nice to have your "authorisation" to analyse ^^ Thanks for your conversation I hope I'm not too hard on you, though...
Feel free to do the same on my work, if you feel so

sorry for late reply! i took a long hiatus off of da
even tho it is late i still really wanted to thank you for all this
believe it or not, most of the time people leave only one words comments
which is nice but does little to help me improve. you offered constructive criticism too
which pointed out both the good and bad, and told me what part of the art attracted
people, and which part i still need to improve.
both perspectives are good, but mostly it reminded me to not get too technical and
to improve my ability to capture the mood. that was the original reason i started
these type of simpler art in the first place... and thus remind me to not fall back too
much into the technical habits. my art is still improving and im still absorbing a lot of
things, so this helps really really much.
so yes, once again, thank you <33

You're very welcome
Remember just one thing : I'm one person in many people and my analysis doesn't mean everybody thinks like me So there is some to take and some to leave, too...
But I'm really happy if I helped you in a constructive way. I mean, I'm far to be as good as you and I feel a bit over my place to give advice... But it's not because one is not so good that one can't appreciate art So, it's just my opinion ^^
For me, DA was about being constructive in both ways : submitting and commenting. I can't follow everybody as intensily but I like to support my favourite artists and give my point of view... except when there are too many comments and that the artist doesn't answer back at all.
It feels weird that people just show and don't tell anything about their art. As if to say "take it or leave it, I don't care !" What's the point, then ? And what's the point to just like and pass on to something else ? It goes the same way as people who just leave one word...
Artists feel often very insecure about their art and need people's recognition to know if they are doing good. If they provide beautiful, why not answer beautiful, too ?

Your art really touches me... because you are a nice person who shines out through your beautiful art

Anyway, so glad you are back ! Hope you have managed to squeeze some drawings-paintings whilst your long haitus ^^ I'm eager to see what you've been up to
Hope you're doing fine, too

Wishing you a lovely day and weekend ^^

i am aware, but an extra insight is always good, right? especially since usually i am my only critique
i totally a agree with that! dont worry about your skill level. although you might not feel like
you can give the same critique as the pro-pro artists out there because pro have the years of
experience and technical skills to match, it doesnt mean you cannot have a different perspective
from them that is often as helpful to the artist as the actual professional feedback.

well, in a way, a lot of people are just here for fun, to share something, but they dont necessarily want a comment
on it. they share it in the sense of "hey look at it" and not "hey, look at it and tell me what is right and what is wrong"
i do understand their perspective and respect that. it is more those who asks actively for a critique but doesnt
take it that usually deters people from saying anything.
that is a very positive thinking, i love the way you think. your thought process is not something people see as often as
they should be seeing in the art community, i think. either they are just simple and overwhelmingly positive with little
to no reason as for why ("omg this is cute!" "i love this!"... appreciated comments, but still lacking in insight compared to long ones)
or, they are overwhelmingly negative and harsh, and while the harsh constructive criticism are still welcome, more
often than not it is just nit-picking when they dont explain why, and sometimes sounds more like a personal opinion
("i dont like it because she has long hair!" --- in other words, the type which is not actually a critique).

thank you for the compliments. it really means a lot to me to hear such words.

haha yes, i do hope i did. school is done and im doing fine, although it will take a while for me to fund another tablet to draw
my usual digital art again. i guess ive been fumbling with pixel art in the mean time, as i do them with a mouse usually anyway.

thank you <3

MayLouise In reply to kokotea [2015-03-23 17:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, more or less. There's a lot of people on DA who are proper professionnals and what they do is very cut, clear, clean... but just looks all the same, in a certain way. And are really expensive ! It feels like an order has been input and the picture factory just spat it out.
Obviously, it asks a lot of skills and I admire that... but  I feel no specific joy seeing them. No emotion except boredom.
So when I see something more natural, more lively, manga style or not, and I feel an emotion about it, I'm really happy 😊

Yeah, I know the feeling ! Have the same problem ! But don't worry, it's part of your unique style and for other eyes, seeing it for the first time, it's absoluetly not visible 😉

kokotea In reply to MayLouise [2015-03-30 17:58:37 +0000 UTC]

sorry for late reply!

yes, i get what you mean, for quite a few of them.
sometimes i cant tell if its because its a style so popular
it becomes "factory-like" or simply because its too stiff.

still, im happy you thought of my art as expressive ^^
ive been working on making my art more lively,
even if i had to simplify my style by a lot.

and i do like my messy style. i know its uniquely me and stuff,
i just wish i had more control with when exactly i can make it cleaner or not
but hey, im improving, so thats what counts haha <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MayLouise In reply to kokotea [2015-03-31 08:37:21 +0000 UTC]

It's ok I'm not that regular either

For myself, I stopped completly elaborated work, as simplicity is much more in my range. I could do more sophisticated stuff... with a lousy render. I just had to admit I was too scruffy for that... Even if it was hard !

NOT saying you're scruffy, too, no ^^

I just think that unless you are a master of technique, too much detailed drawings looses the eye when contemplating. I rather go for the emotion that comes out of the drawing...
For example : I rather look at one angry line on a paper, which in it's simplicity catches all the bottled up rage, than a very detailed and complexe drawing that stays without emotion.

What I really like in this one specifically is how the lanterns danse : they seem to be real, have a weight in reality, and enjoying themselves. It gives me the feeling you really loved drawing-painting them and you transmitted a hope of pleasure in the red orange.
I like too the girl : she doesn't look like a manga girl (though inspired) as manga's lines are very precise and simple. She looks normal, alive. And she's not dumbly smilling. Or looking pensive. Or crying. Or whacking someone with a ten ton hammer.
She is actually having a face of her own, between a smile, expectancy, hopes, breathing, blinking eyes...

What I mean is that when you walk around streets and look at passing by faces, they're in their own thoughts, sometimes happy, sometimes unhappy, sometimes neutral... And her face looks like someone living her own life, as those faces in the street, if that makes any sense to you.
In simpler words (maybe) : she has a story to tell.

I like your unique messy style too

And as you, I have the same issue : I'd like to at least control when I do things right... Not just simply crash up (inverted from crash down, though the process is the same...)

If you love what you do, you will improve, no matter what

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kokotea In reply to MayLouise [2015-04-03 03:10:24 +0000 UTC]

well i do love the more complicated stuff. but im not cut for patience.
and at this stage i dont have the skills to pull it off effortlessly.

yeah, i get your point. that one drawing that just catches your attention even simple
because it just has a feeling thats hard to describe.
i rlly like 's drawings for that reason, too.

well, its nice that you can see so much from a drawing <33
can i ask what exactly made you feel like that? like which part of the drawing gave it emotion?
since im still quite new at this expressive thing, i wish to understand it more myself.
i know it wasnt done on purpose or anything, i just drew it like i normally did, and i dont
think my brain has caught on how exactly i am doing it.

yes, thats a big issue. i also think thats what separate us from the masters who draw simple things,
but know exactly what they are doing and can freely control their everything.

thats true. <33 no matter how fast or slow.
