I have to ask. Between the two oni, who's usually the stronger one? The Red Oni or Blue Oni?

Oh yeah I know about that trope. Yeah they're usually even, but when I look at Samurai Champloo I always saw Jin as the better one in terms of technique and being better than Mugen. Which do you think matters more in battle the physical aspect or strategic? Also do you have a preference for either oni?

Oh man, I'm sorry. I check on my comments like twice a year. So I miss it when I get an interesting discussion. :')
In case you are still around, I might as well answer. It might be a bit of a mess, though, as I'm not exactly used to writing English anymore.
I usually prefer the blue Oni as strategical fighting is so much more interesting.
Samurai Champloo is a perfect example and I totally agree on Jin. Mugen is wild an therefore Jin or other experienced fighters can't read him well, which definitely plays for him, though.
The blue Onis appears to be the stronger one most of the time. As our main character and underdog is the red Oni most of the time, he somehow often ends up being stronger for some weird reason like magical fox spirits or standing up besides being defeated, though.
There probably isn't a clear answer on who is usually stronger, when I think about it. The blue Onis are often the rivals that are way stronger in the beginning. Throughout the story the red OniΒ catches up or gets even better. I don't even seem to know of good examples like Samurai Champloo where the two are in a more static relationship.
In real life, the fighting is usually completely different. I talked to a few people that train or used to train Martial Arts. And someone that doesn't know anything about those but therefore doesn't think twice about hitting you in the face is incredibly dangerous. An experienced (and probably drunk) guy in a bar can apparently easily win against most trained martial artists (at least when talking about the ones that aren't neccessarily masters or have too little experience with those fights). Everything comes down to reflexes more than anything else.
And therefor anime and tactics are so much more interesting than real fights.
Discussing the Onis is difficult as there are usually mixes of the character traits that make characters interesting.
In KHR for example, I not only like Gokudera as a Character best, but also found his fights the most interesting as he strategically interacts with his surroundings (his fight with Bel for example) but still keeps his really straight forward (and explosive) style.
I quess Samurai Champloo does the contrast of Jin and Mugen incredibly well. But I don't think they would work as main characters without a third person.
I also kind of saw that as a problem in Naruto. There wasn't much of a good dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke.
