This is a very good study and breakdown. Love the thought processes going on here. I also think they may be fairly accurate.
I'm thinking the fringe/crest areas across the brow and skull could be similar to calcified feathers [attached to muscle, not bone for sure]. In that case, the comparisons to a cockatoo could be fairly accurate. Those mandibles definitely aren't avian... I'm thinking.....ant-like given their social structure. after all, ants have a hierarchy, turians have a hierarchy....hmmm. That might also explain the carapace-like structure of their cowl/chest and the odd boney spikes. Toss in some velociraptor for the skeletal structure of the head and body along with the plating, scales and hide, smear some human in there for the general shape and....well...Mr. Vakarian becomes a wonderful mix-mash of critters. Gotta love the space boyfriend..lol.Β

When it comes to turians, I've always tended to believe they have infrasound hearing, so they know when the weather is going to change. And their eyes are protectected by a form of rock, like the eyes of flounder on earth are. But for the turians, an eye structure with a optical-quality mineralized covering protects not only from grit, but from the threat of eye cancer. But in exchange, they can percieve neither red colors nor purple. And they can kick bloody hard, and the males have hemipenes. But these have to be everted before they can be used.
And the fringe can have its pointy things detached, with means that if you reverse-headbutt someone, the fringe's armor-piercing spines can end up lodged inside that person's flesh. In an emergency, I believe you can even break off part of your fringe and use it as a tool, since it would grow back. Moreover, I believe they make tools and art objects from the plates and so on that were once part of their forebears.

Do note, however, much like the area where a bird's beak joins with its gums, it would be firm and rigid, containing nerve endings as well, like a mammal's gums where teeth exist.

I bet their mandibles serve some kind of display purpose, or did, at some point. They're very odd thing to have evolved, even as shielding the lower jaw. Technically speaking, one would expect shielding to grow on the jaw, unless there was another purpose that having the sheilding separate became desireable.
Also, the very prehensile tongue makes sense, how else could they eat with such stiff jaws?

Interesting thoughts. All seem extremely plausible though!

Considering the creator's thoughts and their resemblencs and all, I used my history of working with birds and applied it here. [link] <-- example of a beak.

Very interesting. I have never been around birds much though my dad did own a couple of conures when I was a kid.

Very lovely ^_^ and it makes sense a lot of what you bring up. Especially the part about the tongue being more akin to a birds. Makes sense with their raptor like features. Keep up the good work!

Thanks a lot! This is going to be very useful... Turians are so hard to draw, and as there's only the games to take references from, drawing them with their mouths open is rather tricky.
Again, thanks!

thank you. I discovered that it i dont try and understand the mechanics of something, such as turian physiology, then I have a hard time trying to draw it. I learned the best way to better my style is to do these studies.
I will probably use this: [link] (scanned from the art book of game one)
Do do a more developed sketch of the turians without armor. As the image they provide us fans is vague at best.

Yes, I agree. I'm sure Bioware has a folder (or 8) sitting around at their offices somewhere full of Turian concept art... and they don't want to share...
