Description I know there are a billion other stamps just like this one, but I wanted to make my own.

I haven't actually had anyone say this to me....but I know some people have.

This also comes with my experience that when I draw something like say, a horse, or some other animal that takes me about ten minutes or so and people like it. Then I spend over an hour on a "anime" style picture and people will just ignore it. It drives me nuts.

People who deny it is art don't know what art is.
I don't care if people hate the anime art style. It is still art.

I definitely agree with this, but:
"spend over an hour on an 'anime' style picture and people will just ignore it"

Ohohoho, I have NEVER seen a case of that before. The stereotype (which is mostly true) is that on DA, people eat the anime style UP. That's sorta why whenever there's something that looks kinda anime-esque, especially in the "kawaiiuguudesu" style (big eyes, really cutesy, mostly female characters), you can expect it to get a lot of comments. The fact that almost everyone appears to be AIMING for that kind of anime style is the reason why the front page appears to look like a fangirl's generic assortment of cartoon characters all "anime-ified"

Anyone who says it isn't is just plain racist. It's just another style of cartooning.

I don't really think disliking it is racist, a lot of anime characters aren't Asian.

Anime is a Japanese art style. Never said they were all Asian. I'm saying hating on the style is racist. I see a lot of people hate on it and diss the Japanese too.

To be honest, I started off my slight obsession for drawing through anime/manga style. Although beforehand I did drawings of imaginary dragons during elementary school and did a ton of them since two really good friends I knew moved elsewhere I had to find something fun to do by myself. Once I got into drawing anime/manga, it opened new doors for me. It didn't stop or hinder me from learning the actual basics of art such as studying from still life and figure drawing (mostly because I'm able to look at things frankly and for what they really looked in front of my eyes). Eventually I took some actual drawing classes (more thorough and less "arts 'n crafts" class) in community college to try and improve on my drawing and coloring skills further (and its working so far...). Although I'm still striving to develop my own style and sharpen up my human anatomy skills.

The one of the common negative misconceptions about anime/manga is the claim that the styles look similar to each other. This is obviously not true if one compares drawing styles between different genres and artists (ie. Berserk, Vampire Knight, Death Note, Sailor Moon). Even if compared within the same genre, there are artists who have their own distinct style (and have clearly studied traditional art at some point). Satoshi Kon for example is someone who didn't make carbon copy characters. He varied the ages of the cast as well so it's easy to make clear distinctions even between characters such as Paprika and Dr. Chiba (Paprika).

nothing in art is easy, don't think you can get off stark free because you think cartooning with be easier....you're just fooling yourself. and im here to make a confession. there is something im deeply ashamed of, and that's drawing anime. it may never be accepted, as so as cartooning, but nothing really curdles up inside me more then that unsettling thought.... of judgement. I've found myself having a hard time accepting the fact that ill have ten times more haters then ill ever want because I set my passion into this. but the fact that people may not look past the fact of what i do to see what im really made of, that's when you unconsciously change inside because you find yourself trying to protect yourself from being crushed inside. I started out as this, tried other things, but I hid away in fear of being flamed, so I gave myself a disguise, blinded myself with endless practice so I would forget of those days, so i could get better so i wouldn't be flamed for being of that in the cartooning/anime community because I was "one of them". it's a loathsome existence. A meaningless task for an artist under the pressure of fear. some don't even accept us as "artists" and its makes me want to hide somewhere and cry, because all we want is acceptance. the practicing may have helped a bit but it never went as far as that, i never stopped, i got depressed and burnt out and i wondered if id ever could go back to those days of freedom and happiness but i knew the consequences and i trembled inside at the thought of it. I admire you, do you have any advice for me?

Wow, you win for giving me the longest comment ever. I'm not really sure what to say. I tend to only have people irl that don't like my anime stuff. People on the internet seem to like it and I haven't gotten that much guff for it.

that's good, i seem to have the unfortunate luck of running into complete jerks though, i love criticism but not hatred. most of the time its in real life for me too. the internet, most of the time but not always, is very accepting.

In my opinion, anything that is creativly put down on paper is art. Sure, I can't draw worth a flip, but it's crappy art! Screw the critics, art is art.

The reason art teachers tend to be dismissive of anime is because there are so many kids who go in and draw it, and refuse to take constructive criticism. I once saw someone outright refuse to draw in a realistic style in a figure drawing class. They want to show you the rules so you can exaggerate them effectively when you become a cartoonist. They are doing their job.

Senior year we got to do whatever we wanted for senior thesis, and I almost ended up doing a manga portfolio. I decided not to. One of the things my art teacher told me was that there was a difference between a drawing and art, and a lot of the manga I was doing was just a "drawing". I grew out of the style, and decided I wanted to draw more realistic comic books. That was my decision.

The other reason your art teacher will try to get you to change is that if you become a manga artist in the US you will not get any jobs drawing in that style. It is nearly impossible. Because Tokyopop went under and a bunch of bad American manga artists screwed it up, you will not get very much work drawing in an exclusively manga style. With other art you have a bit of a chance, but it is tight. Furthermore, if you cannot change your style to fit your client (in this case your teacher's) wishes then you have no business being an artist.

I know right?

The only thing I can say about anime art is that it attracts a lot of younger kids who don't exactly have a lot of artistic talent. :/

I think this is why people think it sucks.

If it goes through all the phases any other form of media does, why SHOULDN'T it be considered art? If they say it isn't, they might as well say Romeo and Juliet (and its 1,000 something forms), The Terminator, and Everything else isn't a form of art in media!

This happens to me all the time. I can draw realism, it's easy, anyone can do it. And I scratch out some graphite representation of an item and feople say oh, youre so talented. The minute I do something cartoony/anime, and actually put some thought into the caricature, the proportions, the color, style, etc., people ask me when i'm going to do some more 'real' art.
