Realistic Lotad! A very underrated Pokemon.

The Pokémon canon offers lighthearted yet surprisingly fertile opportunities for speculative biology.

This is Lotad, a small pseudo-mammalian aquatic herbivore. Its most distinctive feature is a broad dorsal crest, which is wider in diameter than the animal's entire body. This air-filled leathery structure serves two purposes: boosting buoyancy as Lotad skim for vegetation just below the surface of the water, and serving as a rather convincing lily-pad disguise for befuddling potential predators.

Lotad are slow but capable swimmers. The bulk of their diet consists of soft water weeds, cress, and reeds, which they make short work of with their tough beaks. However they have also been observed capturing unwary bug Pokémon by means of their surprisingly long tongues.

On balmy summer evenings in the Hoenn region it is common to hear choruses of Lotad serenading each other with sonorous quacks and croaks.
