Ludo isn't afraid of Toffee. He admired Toffee for his professionalism in how he handled things and up to his point of betrayal saw him as a father figure to try to impress. it was even apparent in season 2 when he came back and Ludo asked if he had any part of his plan, only for Toffee to dismiss him as worthless. Ludo was under this delusional perception that Toffee ever saw Ludo as anything other than a means to an end. It's all Ludo ever was to him, a pawn, and that broke Ludo's heart because he already has very low self esteem.
