You've been drawing a lot of lolita stuff lately?
This is so cute.

Come to think of it, I have! It hasn't been a conscious decision, though. But I am really drawn to the style!

Thank you!

Okay. You need to do some digital painting. Or real painting. Watercolors, markers, oils, acrylics..Painter, PS, Sai, it doesn't matter what you choose, you definitely have an eye for color and I definitely want to encourage it! Seriously, paint stuff, like, without lines or by using very little line work.

I was never a good painter, though I tend to have an eye for color perception when I look beyond what my left brain is telling me I'm looking at XD My art is always all about sketchy lines XD

You should do a self-portrait! It doesn't have to be totally realistic, just put lots of color into it! Paaaaaint

I've been kinda toying with the idea of doing a digital painting, but not having any lineart kinda scares me. Hmmm, maybe when I do the "100 art theme" challenge I'll try it out. It is a great idea! A self-portrait would be interesting, indeed. That brings me back to Drawing I days in college, where we used to sketch self-portraits all the time.

Thanks for the comment, Chris! I appreciate it!

I think that life drawing is something that benefits all artists, regardless of their skill level, and what better (and cheaper) way to do that then using one's self as a model? ^.^ But as for the lineart thing, if you are working digitally, you can always use sketch lines to define areas and to rough out form and mass and contour, but I suggest you paint right over it and just lay color in and focus on a values-only image. If you're working traditionally, same thing, just paint right over your sketch lines, or if you are working with a translucent medium, be sure to erase it back as much as you can so that you're just left with a faint outline to work from.

Going in without any structure at all is gutsy for any artist, but it could be a really good exercise in pushing and pulling the space you create, as well as the forms that sit within that space. Hee, I know you understand what I'm talking about since you went through the fundamentals at college, and because of those fundamentals, I feel that you'll be able to really utilize your talents

As my hard-ass drawing prof used to say, "Drive it like you stole it."

Oh yeah, I remember that girl now! According to Matt's story, she has kinda red-brown eyes. It was an interesting color to mix!

Thanks so much, Mandy-chan!

i saw this and i thought...

'erfect'

and i still stick to that initial impression.

it makes me very happy that my description created exactly what i wanted it to in your mind karen-chan. that, paired with your talent of course, created this wonderfully excellent portrayel of alice.

her expression, amazing. it has the subtle sign of disconnect and aloofness i want her to be pictured to have.

her pose. another check. she looks vulnurable, naive, innocent. you kinda got that from reading between the lines of the chapters which i'm impressed by! it's spot on! the perspective you got goin on is a nice tough too.

and naturally you aced the gothic lolita apsect of her clothing hahah! you're so freakin good at frills and lacing. seriously. talent!

i love her hair and eyes as well. they contrast exactly as beautifully as a imagined they would! the somehwta blunt cut bangs and straightness of the rest of her hair is great!

the background is really impresseive too! the books and candles are so fitting for the actual setting of the book so i'm triply impressed! the addition of her reading alice in wonderland is icing on the cinna bun.

actually, you inspired me a bit with this picture. you might see some hints of that inspiration in the next chapter!

awesome work karen! totally got me all giddy with this!

Aw, I'm glad that was your reaction! I went back and re-read Alice's introduction to make sure it would be as spot-on as I could make it. Your descriptions of her really did paint an idea in my head, indeed. So good job!

I was really inspired by that one scene where Jack leaves her room after eating the soggy food she gave him - and then she closes the door and kinda breaks down. My heart kinda melt for the girl 'cause she's so lonely! ;A; So I really wanted to get that across, but no SO much, since outwardly she does seem very aloof and kinda content with being alone, and even seems fearful of the outside world, seemingly shunning it, at times. The girl's got depth, you did an amazing job with that, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE characters like that.

As always, I love drawing the lolita outfits. I actually did a little search for some inspiration, though, since her outfit also has the maid influence. And that background ... well, it took some time, but I feel it was worth it.

Oho! I will have to keep my eye out on this next chapter, then! I'm excited that you liked it so much as to include some hints to it!

Not a problem, Matt! I'd been wanting to draw her for a while now.

oh sweet! you did just so well with it and seem to have such a firm grasp on her character! that's exactly the kind of undertones to her i wanted you to get.

and i checked out your inspiration for the costume. i actually got inspiration for that one harry and melfina picture for melfina's dress to be honest! you transfered it really well!

Yay! Glad I got her right, then.

OHO, I THOUGHT that dress looked a little familiar! You did a good job with making the style your own, though! I just searched 'maid' on DA, and that was the first decent outfit that showed up.

Haha, I totally don't have any lolita clothing, either. I keep wanting to make an outfit, but I'm always either working on costumes that take priority, or I don't have time. So I hear you there!

>< I can't think of any lolita anime/manga costumes off the top of my head apart from Rozen Maiden but the dresses aren't really anything special, unfortunately.
