I take it you've heard about Donnie's fate in the IDW TMNT comics?
I wouldn't be too certain about his status being permanent. While IDW does tend to go for "Killed off for Real", there have been a few exceptions. And since this is comic book land we're talking about, I get the feeling he won't stay that way.

I heard about it two days ago (when it was announced) and yes you're right, my first thought was maybe donnie is just injured or something but they made such a huge deal about it haha.
