I'm certain that Danny's account is a bit sanitized for Cole's benefit. Despite what he claims, he looks a less than enthused about meeting Theo in the flashback in the first panel; his position also mirrors Cole being picked up by Nurse Jay on page 30 (i.e. "This is most uncomfortable"). I suspect that they got along about as well as Cole and Brian did at first, but likewise warmed up to each other over time.
Also, I don't think I ever quite realized how much of an overbite Danny/Aodan has (had?) until now. I suppose this is supposed to let him show off his pointy teeth more than Cole so he looks aesthetically more animalistic in contrast to our formerly-human protagonist.
