Description Stare into this mask for a while and see what happens...

Hypnos, governor of what lies between. This is another old work, probably from 2005/early 2006. Ink on paper, brush. I worked on this one for quite a while, really getting obsessed on the wings. This is a detail. It probably should go in scraps because of the lame photo and the easily seen separation between the plates. I have the strange sensation that I put too much work into this, and beat it down and made it cry. I might re-engage with this theme and search for a way to perhaps more effectively depict it.

Absolutely amazing work man! Especially the wings and the flame. It's just a pity that the presentation is bad. What size is this illustration?

It is three sheets, each 48.3x61 cm. Had to photo it because it is too big for the scanner. Using weak little digital camera and my lackluster photo skills...

Thanks for you appreciation of it!

You've represented the subject extremely well, to the point of bestowing the image with an outside power perhaps.
I'm easily absorbed into those wings, I can see how one would get obsessed creating them.

Wonderful and hypnotic, a powerful illustration that dwells alluringly in ambient somnolence.

I'm just barely familiar with the character/god/half-god(?) Hypnos. I have seen him depicted by my favorite Hungarian academic realist called Benczur, and Hypnos had wings there too. I guess they symbolize the flight of our imagination in our dreams.

It striked me how well you did the wings. Normally I feel with drawings what could be done better, but not with this one. I like the flame(?) on his head too. It resembles the tail of a dragon a bit. I didn't get the two tails though on the sides of his head.

In general all your work, of which this is a good example, radiates an elemental sense of symbolism. This I think must be another fundamental way to increase the value of any artwork. Something to keep in mind for myself.

I wonder how many more great works you are hiding from us.

I am always impressed by the amount of deatil and subtle shading that you manage to get into your artworks. Even at the top in the back there seems to be form - maybe even a creature.

Excellent.

Hypnos, brother of death, son of night, and shrouded in a cloak of darkness. The snake is a flame in that darkness; as it is the incubator of all life, and the equivalent of the eternal cycle of sleeping and waking, life and death, enlightenment and samsara. There's no wonder it's so prevalent throughout mythology.

I think you have depicted the concept very powerfully here, and I'm still fascinated by the texture and contrast.

this is beautiful; the textures and the flow immediately caught my eye, it's like this piece is aflame. But I do have more things to say about this; I really want to comment more when I don't have to leave for work in 3 minutes...

No problem, anytime! Thanks for writing what you did write. I've been thinking a lot about this drawing, and what I was trying to do with it, since I posted it here. I hadn't looked at it for a year or so. Now I am trying to connect my thoughts to a book I read by the author Gustav Meyrinck. Do you know him?

I don't know Gustav Meyrinck, but upon a brief look into his works, I'm fascinated. Which book did you read?

It appears that he, Poe, and I share the same birthday.

His most realized work is "The Golem". I recommend the Dover edition, as it has some truly phantasmal illustrations that I suspect you will adore.

The other book by him, the one I was referring to, is called "The Green Face". As a whole work, it is not so interesting, but there are some truly fascinating concepts...

That is fascinating about the birthdays. How strange!

...why should it be redone? except for lame photo i can't see some bigger mistakes. even the paper separation seems to fit - for it seems (on first look) like the head with the wings is hanging on some kind of string...

Thank you for the comment! I think I am whining...when I put too much work into a piece, I sometimes feel like I "kill" it with too much attention, that it loses spontanaeity. The mistakes are more visible in the original...somehow, posting on DA makes artworks look better.

"drinking lightning"

an invocation of heavenly exstatic energies...they often wear masks with a long snake biting in hteir heads....I saw some in hte museum of Gironcoli (a international renowned austrian sculptor and painter) he collects old african cult-stuff..

Thank you, I am pretty hard on myself, and sometimes destroy works that I am not happy with. That almost happened to this one, but I ended up painting the background black really fast and stamping it with my seal in anger, then stashing it away. I think I worked on it too long at the time and just got really frustrated...
