Description This is Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII's fourth wife. She was a German princess, whose marriage served to create an alliance with England. However, things didn't work out between her and the king. It's a pretty long story, so I'll just tell about the painting.

Henry was interested in an alliance with the Duke of Cleves, who had two daughters old enough to marry. Hans Holbein, the court painter, was sent to do paintings of the ladies so the king could decide which one he wanted. He chose Anne. However, legend has it that Hans fell in love with Anne while painting her, and portrayed her as prettier than she was in real life.

After Anne had arrived in England and was on her way to the court, the king decided to see her in person, not wanting to wait for his "pretty" new bride. So he dropped in on her early, and was NOT happy with the real woman who had come to marry him. You could imagine how cheated he must have felt. But then again, he wasn't much of a prize himself by this time in his life.

Since the marriage was never consummated, the two of them could legally divorce by English law, but to keep the alliance with Germany, Henry gave Anne her own homes and luxuries to live in, and treated her as his "sister" and friend after that. It's nice to say that Anne of Cleves' marriage to Henry VIII had the happiest ending of all the wives.

This outfit was a real pain in the butt to make, mostly because Anne is shown in her most famous painting wearing a very elaborate and odd-shaped German gown. I had to make the upper sleeves and hat out of beads, and the wired veil was the EASY part, lol. Like some of my other works, this was a 2nd attempt at imitating Anne's famous portrait. The first time didn't go over so well and looked like a mess, so it's good that this one turned out better.

I made this using the Tudors Scene-Maker www.dolldivine.com/the-tudors-… on Doll Divine.

She was truly pretty. Henry just was a stupid idiot and didn't want someone like her, who was sweet.

He didn't understand her very well and treated her bad in the beginning because of it.

I think that she was pretty average-looking, the problem was, Henry had a misunderstanding with her and used it as ammunition against her.

Thank you very much .  I used the Tudors Scene-Maker on Doll-Divine www.dolldivine.com/the-tudors-… The photo of the portrait was difficult to find because there's so many out there, and I had to get one that was hi-res to start with before shrinking it down to fit with the doll.

This was my 2nd attempt and it took 3 hours, but I did other things at the same time.  Sometimes I can get really determined about an art piece, and then nothing else matters for a short time.  It's that artist mentality that they can't stop until the piece is finished.

I am a bit of a perfectionist and will tend to get fed up and start over again or just give up :/.  I admire your determination.

Ive done the Holbien version of Anne of Cleves as well (Its on my thingy if ur interested).

It would be good if a Anne of Cleves hood was put on there....

Oh Im dreaming!

What angered me about the Tudors was that the made Anne seem frumpy and overly german (not that I have anything against Germans) throughout the series.

She was actually very fashionable after the divorce!!!!!

That's very true, but the problem was, the majority of the English ppl weren't familiar w/ Low Countries fashions over in mainland Europe. Although it was popular for a woman to wear Cranach-style gowns, with a round skirt & high waist, and crazy-puff sleeves over in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium; it was rarely figure-flattering. (Kinda brings about the, "what's popular isn't always right, and what is right isn't always popular" kind of proverb, doesn't it? )
The English were used to seeing the sleek styles of the Tudor court, so because the Cranach style was so different, they perceived Anne of Cleves as frumpy, rather than what she might have really looked like. I read that she was tall, blond (which ppl only found out on her wedding day), and was built like a tree-trunk. Not only was Henry having issues w/ his own shortcomings, he preferred petite women w/ curves, rather than tall women who were solidly built.

About 3 hrs. The game didn't have any crazy German fashions, so I had to improvise. Though you can see why the English never picked it up, lol.
