A Cold Winter Night
The air was chilled, and it was easy to see your breath swirling around in front of you as you talked or let out a breath. The moon was out, shining into the area of trees where you were, and was illuminating the group of mobians you sat with around a large bonfire, many conversations being spoken around the flames. A cobalt hedgehog hero was explaining his latest mission to his fan-girl friend Amy dramatically, and you could almost see the hearts in her eyes. Tails was talking to a small rabbit about his newest breakthrough in science, which caused you to smile. You knew of Cream's secret crush on the fox, and smiled silently at her will to listen to him ramble on and on about scientific equations. Rouge the Bat and shadow the Hedgehog weren't present, because of a special G.U.N. Mission.

You blew a breath onto your hands, as you had forgotten to wear gloves tonight. A red echidna glanced at your shaking hands curiously, before quickly looking back into the burning coals of the fire. You had known Knuckles for years, and he was your best friend, hands down. Something was urging you to make conversation with him, so you went with your gut feeling. “Hey Knuckie, something wrong?” You asked in his direction, before his violet pupils were looking into yours with an annoyed flare.

“My problem, is that people keep making me stupid nicknames.” He snorted after, before pointing to your clasped hands. “What's with your hands? They're shaking. Didn't you bring gloves (Y/N)?” You shook your head sheepishly, as Knuckles always lectured you when you did something wrong or stupid. He let out an exasperated sigh and took your hands into his, warming them up with the heat of his signature gloves. Your eyes widened, as he wasn't the type of person to give physical contact to others, unless it was from his fists. You gently held his hand and looked up to see his muzzle tinted red. You smiled and teased him.

“Turning red in the cheeks, huh Knuckie?” He scowled and mumbled something about the lighting of the fire, and the coldness of the winter air, but never gave you a real response. Sonic stood up in a hero like fashion, only to give a yawn and cover his mouth. You turned to look at him, letting go of the red guardian's hands.

“Well, I'm beat. Running around all day and being super amazing like myself can take a lot out of you. I have to get Amy and Tails home anyways.” Tails and Amy stood up beside Sonic and quickly said their goodbyes before leaving with the blue blur. Cream stood up and turned to you and Knuckles.

“My Mom's going to worry about me if I don't get home soon.. See you tomorrow Mr. Knuckles!~ and you too (Y/N)!~” You waved while smiling at the young rabbit, and Knuckles grunted a half-hearted goodbye. This is when your real best friend came out. When no-one was there to see it. He pulled out a bag of marshmallows, obviously kept secret from the others so you could have them to yourselves. You laughed and accepted his offering, and soon you were both laughing and roasting the snow-white treats over the fire.

“Watch out!” You yelled, waving your roasting stick, the marshmallow had caught on fire. Knuckles yelled I surprise and braced himself, before realizing what had happened. He gave you a disapproving look before blowing it out, a black crust having formed from the little misadventure. You laughed and his gaze softened and he wrapped an arm around you. You shrugged internally and let him, and before long he started playing with your (H/C) hair.

“Uh.. What are you doing?” You asked him slowly, grinning slightly at the way he immediately retracted his hand.

“Nothing...” He grumbled when he got an eyeful of your not-amused face. “It looked soft.. So nice.. Smells like your shampoo.” He shrugs an quickly looks away. It was a long time before he started to talk to you again. “Hey.. (Y/N).. Do you like Shadow?” He asked abruptly. You were about to answer when he held up his finger. “I know, you just spend a lot of time with him.. I know you only think of Sonic and Tails as friends so.. Shadow's the only one you could really.. ya know.” He hesitated, not knowing your reaction.

“What do you mean the only one? You're here too!” You blurted out, before you covered your mouth with wide eyes set into your features. The fire had grown dim, and dramatic shadows were cast over the Echidna's face. He scooted closer to you, his muzzle getting dangerously close to your face.

“(Y/N)... Do you like me..? Because.. I've liked you ever since we first met! You're so pretty in your own unique ways, and your funny and smart and kind! I just... do you?” You had never seen this much insecurity radiated from him, his nervous violet pools staring directly into your (E/C) eyes. You swallowed thickly, and then spoke.

“...Yes. I like you Knuckie. A lot.” He smiled slightly, before his eyes started to close and he started to lean towards you. You showed a few signs of hesitation, but you leaned in too, until your lips bumped together. His were hot and spicy compared to the chilled air that enveloped you. You continued kissing him passionately, util the fire finally consumed itself in the moonlight.
