Description

*plays Taps on the kazoo*

Farewell, MAD; farewell, Alfred E. Neuman -- your days of regular publishing may be over, but your stupid is eternal. As is your brand image, which your corporate overlords will half-heartedly exploit for as long as it makes a buck.

On a more serious note, high-five to Bill Morrison, whose 1-year tenure as Executive Editor produced a better MAD than we'd seen in the 20 years prior. Potrzebie, Bill!

Magazines continue to drown in an Internet sea of content... I wonder if there will ever be an equilibrium between paid content and free.

I read MAD in the 80s and 90s, as well as the older garbage they reprinted. I thought it was funny, no matter how stupid it was. It’ll be missed.

Sad, saying good bye to another relic of another time.Β  MAD was a staple of my childhood, we the Xennials were the last to appreciate it.

I read the comic books in the 70s, didn't even know it was still around now.

Back then it was in comics what Monty Python was in TV, kinda. Well, nothing lasts forever...

Let's hope that this isn't a canary in the coalmine situation, and MAD is all that's going out of business.

Let's be honest, MAD magazine has been skating by on its rep and its place as an 'Institution' for years. The stuff they'd been putting out for the past 10-20 years simply hasn't had the old zing. The old warhorses were tired, and the young turks simply hadn't found their voices. Or, worse, they had found their voices and they were lame.

While it was largely ignored by academics and historians, MAD was one of the most influential periodicals in the USA of the 20th Century. It challenged the Commerce driven media, heckled Political hypocrisy, pointed out the inanities of both Liberal and Conservative nitwits, and tweaked the nose of Middle Class complacency. But it succeeded to the point where it made itself irrelevant. Its sneering point of view slowly became the norm as the smart-mouthed kids who read it became the smart-mouthed adults who influenced Politics, Commerce and Culture.

Rest well, Old Soldier. Lay your weary head on the whoopie cushion of posterity and know that your snide diatribes live on in your readersΒ

As someone, who’s been reading and collecting many issues of MAD Magazine for over 10 years, It’s honestly very saddening to see that there won’t be anymore new content. At least there’s the older issues to fall back on.

Wow...it wasn't that long ago when the magazine got its reboot, either.

Honestly it feels like it was a last minute decision. It feels just yesterday when the reboot came out.
