Angon Marawi
2017
Metallic Gel Pen on Canvas
"Angon" or "Ahon"means "to rise", as this artwork calls for the city of Marawi to rise from the ashes. In May 2017, terrorists infiltrated the city of Marawi. The Philippine military tried to apprehend these terrorists, which would lead to a 5 month long battle, which reduced much of the city of Marawi to rubble.
Marawi is the seat of power and culture of the Maranao people, a proud and artistic people. It is heartbreaking to see their city in ruins, and its people suffering amidst the clean up and reconstruction process.
The Maranao have been converted to Islam, since the 1300s. Thus, my artwork uses the ancient Filipino script, called the baybayin, and renders the prayer of encouragement in the Arabic calligraphic style, reflects the duality of the Maranao culture which has mixed the traditions if Islam, Hinduism and that of the much older Philippine people of the area, collectively called the Lumad.
