The concept of the diwata is quite proliferate all throughout the Philippine archipelago. Although to the different tribes, the description of the diwata varies. The diwata are other worldly beings in human form and interact in human affairs.
The diwata in some cultures are thought to be minor gods, in others they are spirits of nature, and to some they are spirits of the dead elevated to a higher spiritual rank.
The diwata are also called anito or anit and encantada / encanto.
One such famous tale of a diwata is that of Maria Makiling of Mount Makiling in Laguna.
The female diwata in the drawing is a nature spirit.
