Description "If thoughts flowed without the movement of lips, then what have we left to say to each other?"

Hong Kong's literature has this unique air about it. They're perhaps not as full and perfectly structured as China's, but hey, some of them give such a feeling of perfection that a perfectly structured piece of writing cannot give... I do hope I am making sense orz

The thing is, I enjoy light readings of HK novels - crisp content, smooth lovely layout, and traditional Chinese running vertically down the pages!!

AAaahhh that is lovely~ i love how it fades out into the page. Totally nice~ great texture, and such a dreamy moment.
I agree with you, although I don't read Chinese I have that feeling about Japanese light novels at least, where the writing seems to be half-finished, but that's part of what evokes a feeling. Some English authors can do it, it's a very versatile language, but.... very rarely. The vertical flow is so nice.... hmm. I can't explain it any better than you I guess

Ahhhhh I am epic late!
If English literature is a like rich broth and wine, then Asian ones are clouds of mysterious tea (perhaps)! both are wonderful, though their aromas are quite different from one and another! Argh I don't think anyone can ever explain such things well XD

Yes vertical is special

And last but not least, thanks so much for the comment!

Beautiful quote.
I like Asian literature in general- it feels very rich and unique. I've never tried Hong Kong Literature though...

that being said, I like this picture a lot. Very beautiful texturing.

Thanks for the kind comment!
The quote is just my blabbering after a generous dosage of reading. Glad you like it though

You are right, Asian literature definitely has its own class of tastefulness.
I wonder if you've enjoyed anything in particular?

I did! Yoko Ogawa ( Diving Pool, The Housekeeper and the Professor ), Haruki Murakami ( Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman ), Amy Tan (Joy Luck Club)- from the top of my mind. Now reading something called "The Sailor who fell from grace from the sea."

Can you recommend a few more good ones?
I've been wanting to read Ghost Story [ [link] ] as well, but it's in mandarin, and my level is no where near good yet- I must practice more!

Also want to try reading about Siddhartha some time soon, aha.

Sorry for the extra delayed reply and thank you for the recommendations!

I like Haruki Murakami too, though his books do send off an oppressive feeling (maybe it's a special air of certain modern Japanese literature, who knows?). Speaking about modern Japanese literature, Miyuki Miyabe's works are one of my fond reads as well. Have you ever read her Kasha?

I also adore Bo Yang from Taiwan (or the PRC if you like, he was banished and politically imprisoned for his works in different places of China) - I truly love the flair of his writing and wit! his work! I believe his Ugly Chinaman is translated into English.

I also read the books by Yi Shu from Hong Kong. Her works are a lot lighter in comparison to the authors above. She mostly writes about modern stories of females living in HK. I tend to like her earlier works better, for they seemed a little fresher and more interesting. She's a wonderful writer, though her novels never epic they are terrific reads. My mum likes to nibble her books like snacks, and then pass them down to me to enjoy However, I don't think there are any English translations of her books.

Siddhartha! Yes I think we should both lay our hands on it soon, hurghhh.

Ive heard of YiShu but never read her works. Perhaps I try her, she sounds lovely. I find most oriental books to be rather heavy in theme- so to find something lighter is always a pleasure.
I don't find Haruki Murakami oppressive- its an interesting term you used there. I find his stories calming, and tranquil. He could be talking about the most nonsensical things ( talking monkeys) and it still feels very natural- a slice of life. I like his style a lot. It's honest.

Oh dear, Kasha sounds terribly familiar- but I dont think I've read it. I shall try it ! That, and Bo Yang too. Thank you for your recommendations !

I agree with what you feel about Murakami's works, though I do sense something disturbing in what he writes - a strange impression that resembles over-viewing modern cities hidden under bodies of dark and clear waters, translucent but queer...

But alas, my young head is subjected to its own contradicting opinions, which may or may not change later! I must sink my teeth into more of these Oriental cuisines!
