Oh, I'm sorry for him and for your loss...
We've ran something like a home shelter about ten or eight years ago — took abandoned cats and dogs from street, gave them some medical and sometimes cosmetic care and tried to find them a new home. I've managed to run it for a few years till I found out that I can't give MY animals — those who lived in our home long enough — for adoption, because I don't trust people who take them (the attitude towards animals in our country is... not very good in general).
So we just stopped taking new animals and moved to helping other volunteers with their home shelters (there little to no state shelters for dogs here, and exactly no state shelters for cats, so all of them are volunteer home shelters). For now I may just very rarely take an abandoned cat from the street to give it medical care and a bit of rehabilitation and then hand it over to other volunteers for adoption. Mostly I help with socal media advertising of animals for adoption and help with photoes of those in search for home.

I thought sometimes about running a home shelter, but I don't think I could bare to part with an animal if I've had it for a very long time- I would have grown too attached, I tell my family a lot the only people I ever trust with my cats is my little brother and my mom (my mom because she loves me and she knows how much cats mean to me) and my little brother because he adores cats almost as much as I do, he snuggles, squeezes, pets, even gives them baths despite the fact they don't like it because he knows it's good for them, even sometimes when I say something like "what if one of our cats get outside?" he says he would run after them, jump a fence, do whatever it takes to bring them home.
Like you, our shelter's kind of suck- we've been to one maybe three times?..the first cat we got from it was Zippy, and although Zippy was lovely; nice, and sweet- he had a fair share of health problems that plagued him throughout his years, he even experienced seizures and had trouble walking a lot, you would think the shelter would have known that about him and told us, but nope to the shelter he was just "white cat"
The second cat we got ended up giving us all ringworm for a some amount of time, and the third cat? he ended up doing the same, when being at the shelter the second time around I had asked what a species of a cat was and the shelter didn't seem to understand what I was asking, to me? if they are running a place that is supposed to help animals get adopted- they should know some of these details right?
So, in the end, we ended up getting most of our other cats from the streets, one day while me and my mom were walking; all of a sudden my mom points and goes "hey look there's a cat coming at you fast" I look down and here comes a small chubby black cat dashing for me, naturally I bend down to pet her you know? what I have for cats, I just do that lol she quickly warmed up to me, and we went around asking and pretty much everyone around said they thought she was a homeless cat; that she had some owner who basically moved and left her behind, we thought she may have been pregnant so we took her in, turns out she was really just fat lol but still she's been a joy to have around for like ever.
Then there was this one other cat we ran across, my little brother just melted over we later named Hissy- one day we overheard some noise coming from outside, and when we went outside (we put food out for stray cats) there she was, we cornered her; and my little brother was like "she's just a baby we're taking her in" ever since then the cat adores him XD there was also a few more, but do you really want me to tell the story of all of them or am I rambling to much? XD sorry I just adore my cats, I get to talking about them a lot lol

Well, everyone, I think, who loves their pets is eager to tell the stories about them every time there's someone who listens — I can tell these stories for hours. Some of them are funny — as the one with three white cats I've mentioned earlier (all of those three were not siblings and got to our home due to a funny mistake: first my dog found one white kitten, we gave her care, vaccinated it and gave to a young couple one day, then the nexd day my husband found the similar white cat just near the house and thought that it was ours — just the couple brought it back for some reason. a few hours later we discovered it was a totally different kitty, with all the stray kittern problems — fleas, worms and what not. we left it for rehabilitation and then a few days later a friend volunteer brought us a third white kitten — she also thought that the couple which adopted the first cat threw it away — they lived in her region of the city — and this was also a different kitten it had spots on the back which our first cat lacked. And another week later the couple came to ask us for keeping their white cat while they go for vacation. They never returned, so we happened to have three similar cats. Funny thing is that two of them vere adopted, and I don't know which one exactly is the one left here at home — the first one, the second, or the third one). There was also a story about seven two-days-old baby kittens found in a trash can — I had to bring them to the university I studied in and them to my workplace — to have possibility to feed all of them in time. All seven survived and it was a great achievement! Unfortunately I anly have information about the two families these kittes live in, the others have dropped contact — but those two are still alive and healthy though they both are 12 years old now.
But I feel I'm talking too lot.
Just keep up the good job you're doing!

Nah, you're good- I love to hear good cat stories seriously. ^^ you ever wanna talk about how much you adore cats, I'm all for it.
Personally for me, there was a cat named Hop that had run across my family for awhile- she spent the better part of at least three Christmas's watching my dad put up Christmas lights (but he doesn't really like cats much so he didn't tell me about it thinking I'd want to take her in) then one day while me and my mom were coming back home from like the grocery store or something she finally made herself known, and of course I went over to pet her she seemed super happy and friendly even nearly followed us into the house, I brought out some food for her, began to pet her, love on her etc; along with my little brother who later came out and began to do the same, we went back and forth as to what to name her, and decided either Flop if it was a boy or Hop if she was a girl, turns out she was a girl which kind of annoyed my little brother (guess he wanted her to be a he XD) but nonetheless both of us continued to go outside to love on her, made sure she had food all of that.
It got to the point where she was coming over every single day for food and water, my mom said she would wake up early in the morning to put out food and see her and say things like "what's up Hop?" and Hop would meow back like "nothing much just chilling" XD finally we were like screw it, let's bring her inside and make her one of our own (especially after we were told by a neighbor that her in-law's were known to poison cats ) but when we were brought in Hop she had this sort of melt down and we ended up having to let her go, we learned researched and believed she may have been feral.
The following day we continued putting out the food and she continued showing up, she even ended up making herself a little bed close by some bushes- and my mom said it began to get to the point where she didn't believe Hop would ever leave, she remembered looking through the window of my dad's room at like 3:00 am in the morning and could still see Hop sleeping in her bed, I was glad to know Hop was getting comfortable with us, but I was worried that she could get hurt (a lot of dangerous outside you know) finally worse came to worse when she didn't show up one day, we were worried about her and continued to go out like every hour looking for her, my mom kept trying to tell me "it's going to be okay, somedays she doesn't come by" type of thing (my mom knows how much I love cats, so she must have seen the panic on my face) after it was like 9:00 at night, finally my mom said she caught a glimpse of Hop and me and my little brother went out to see her, that's when we discovered she had an injury on her side area (it was like pretty bad ) I was worried, and I asked my mom if we could put Hop in the garage until she recovered thought okay it's not technically "inside" it's more outside, and thankfully Hop seemed okay with it.
Cut to a couple of weeks later, and Hop began to feel better; but then we began to realize she was entering into the garage when we'd leave like the side garage door open, it was so cute sometimes one of us would go out to do laundry or something, and there was a box and suddenly Hop's head would pop up and she'd be like "meow?" lol after that, we kind of went back to the same routine until FINALLY Hop one day got inside my mom was freaking out thinking the other cats may hurt her, I was freaking out myself like "what's she doing?" but since then she's adapted to being inside and seems to love it.
Sorry I talk too much too XP
You too
