Description DAZ Studio - Iray - Photoshop - NIK Collection

Update:
- Further to the comments on the original and the exchanges we had, I changed Jester’s nipples, which in turn lead to adjusting the normal maps. Members of Nipple Committee, and everybody else who wants to join said committee, please feel free to share your thoughts. She was once again surprised and not happy at all, that DAZ 3D thinks her nipples are not worthy of a separate material zone. Neither surface setting is final though, as I would need to test with different lights, as well as alongside other characters;
- There are a few other changes in props and their placement, and the main light is now slightly diffused.

Cheers,
Laspe

---

She has been waiting to be named for more than a year Runaway , is possibly a vampire's Bride , and appears as Jester in Five Corners ...
The title is a reference to Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York... In fact, she and Jenny Everdeane may even have something in common…

Jester now looks a bit sad compared to before, even though originally she was to be cheerful and talkative. In the end, a touch of melancholy would work even better, considering where she came from, her current job description, and whom she is attracted to...

I have changed and adjusted all the textures for the GF3 character to work in DAZ Studio version 4.9. Any thoughts, suggestions, and opinions would be more than welcome.

Cheers,
Laspe

I have to disagree with a critique that talks about the drama in her eyes. For me, this image's eyes are empty and do not suggest "drama." The eyes remind me of ant video dramatization of human AI (see "Human," for example, or Hannah in "Blade Runner.)

I believe the drama is elsewhere: the clock in the background suggesting that this character is bound my time that is timeless. The tightly puckered nipples suggesting some since of arousal/interest. The curious fold in the "grandma" style panties. The Celtic cross (reinforced by the auburn hair color) on a single cord. The leather wrist band and a bracelet behind it. A slight hue of perspiration causing a glow on her skin. The drapery giving way to an indistinct wallpaper (or moldy drywall). Her nails which look surprising clean in an environment that seems less than clean. A curious non sequitur with an oil lamp on the table, along with a photo and what looks like a razor blade (open). . . and the ever present wine bottle. . . .all of these accoutrements create the drama for me.

As I noted earlier, I am compelled by what is "unsaid" in your work instead of the obvious.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to write the critique. You are correct, all the items in the scene are there for a reason, but I don’t know for sure what actually took place:

- The character here is a prostitute, same one as in the other image you commented on: Cocotte. The photo on the table is of another prostitute, Marquise, who this girl is attracted to;

- Yes, the blade is open and has blood on it, so likely has been used. The question is on who: the subject of her attraction or maybe a client who has been "bad" to the subject of her attraction. You will notice that her jewelry is of cheap metals, whereas there is also a ring made from more expensive metals on the table, as well as a bill and some coins. Whose ring is that? I myself, don’t know the answer;

- The clock has a meaning, or rather the time has. Depending in whether it is perceived as AM or PM, the whorehouse may or may not have patrons, but then again some patrons stay for as long as they wish;
- And then again... whose diary is on the table remains unclear.

The thing is that I myself, do not know the answers to everything in the image, and it is more a mystery to me than anything else.

With regards to drama there should be some, for a simple reason that the girl here wouldn’t be very happy:

- Her approaches are ignored;

- It is not at her own will she ended up in a brothel. I imagine her story is similar to that or Irish immigration shown in Martine Scorsese “Gangs of New York”, and she probably was a thief just like Jenny was, or maybe was in some gang. This also explains the title and the red wristband, along with the Celtic cross;
- She may have just used that blade, and my guess is that is why she is looking to her left and bit downwards.

If you look at the narratives to some of the other images in the Five Corners folder, you will see how this girl talks, but chances are high that she is doing all that on purpose... I did change her appearance for technical reasons, so she now has an aura of melancholy to her as opposed to being more playful and cheerful before, but that is to the better as it makes the character more complex, and would also be a challenge for me in terms of showing how she wears a playful and even silly mask...

But a lot of the above is my knowledge and is yet to somehow appear in the images and narratives. The story takes place at an unknown time in an unknown place in the past. I don't have time to learn modeling, so for outfits, etc. I have to use contemporary style items and re-textures them for a more vintage feel… That explains the panties. Good point on the nails too... To myself, I called this is an anti-pinup, since everything surrounding her is worn and old, her panties are simple cotton, her jewellery is pewter, etc. In other words this is not a glamorous eye candy image, as the world these girls live in is far from rosy... on the contrary!

Once again thank you for the critique!

Cheers,

Laspe

Thank you for taking the time to pen this lengthy response. . . where do the images come from? I understand how the image from a film ("Pretty Baby" comes more to my mind in contrast to "Gangs" given your response) may spin out something. . . but where do the themes/ideas emerge?

Laspe In reply to morganafaye [2016-12-05 16:33:36 +0000 UTC]

I see your association with "Pretty Baby", but neither of my characters are similar to the character in that film... Don't forget that it's an imaginary world... "Gangs of New York" is an inspiration for her backstory, not her present situation...

If what you are asking is where I get the ideas for my images from... it would probably be hard to answer, as anything can be inspirational... But for me the characters are most important, which could be similar to protagonist in notorious creations, but not absolutely the same...

Or I misunderstood what you asked?

In my opinion 100% of the drama in this truly amazing piece is in her eyes and facial expression. While her figure is unquestionably delightful and the skin texture is remarkable in its reality, frankly she could be fully clothed in even modest attire and, for me at least, absolutely none of the impact would be lost.

If I have any critique at all (and frankly even posting a critique of an artist I so admire is a little frightening) it would be that I would LOVE to see a version of this where she IS in fact fully clothed in some period appropriate attire if for no other reason to see whether my feeling about her eyes and facial expression is verified. Honestly with the subtle but amazingly realistic lighting I believe it would be a piece of work on the level of one of the Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen or Vermeer. I know this is not a critique, just an observation. But still......

Hi Milo,

Thank you so much for the kindest words and compliments, especially comparison to such notorious painters. I am sincerely flattered.

I like your suggestion of having this character in some period clothes and will see what I have. My intention was to have Jester and her "colleague" Marquise out and about fully dressed at some point of time. Although given what I have in my library, I didn't specify the actual time period, kind of saying to myself that the events are happening sometime in the past. What that means in reality is that I re-texture modern items of clothing to give them a vintage feel.

In one of the versions she had a top on, but even re-textured it looked more modern than everything else. I also thought that if she has just serviced a patron she would have likely put on just one piece, not bothering to collect anything else.

Once again thank you very much for the support and taking the time to write the critique.

Sincerely,
Laspe

Thank you so much for the detailed comment and of course the favorite. I presume this is happening at some unknown time in the past. Have to use modern looking items and re-texture them for something closer to a vintage look. The girl here is a prostitute, and she has a colleague who she is attracted to. There is a bit more about them in my gallery, and this was intended as a series. I hope at some point of time I will be able to finish it...
Once again thank you!

I would say this wild west, Texas if not the clock. Reminds me for some reason West world tv series from JJ Abrams.

Thank you very much for the kind comment! She is actually a prostitute in a brothel, but you are right, she may have some acquired some class over the years she had to serve her clients... I am not sure exactly when the story takes place, but my guess it's late XIX, early XX century...

I've held off offering comments about this character and image because I wanted to say something worthwhile. I mean: I like her. I like this portrait of her, but couldn't figure out why. Now, I think I get it. She's very much (to me) a creature of the early 20th Century - the years leading up to and during Prohibition - when youth was a fleeting thing and life wore people down faster than what we're accustomed to and take for granted today. She's a beauty that's endured hardship and is still beautiful in spite of and because of it.

At least that's my take on things. I might be a writer, but I'm terrible at verbalizing my feelings about art. I either like it or I don't. If I hit the button then rest assured I really like what you've done and it speaks to me on some (usually wordless) level.
