Description Stykkishólmur church (aka Stykkishólmskirkja) in Stykkishólmur,  Snæfellsnes peninsula, Iceland. This is a modern church made from white concrete and was consecrated in 1980. It seats 300 people and is also used for concerts.
As churches go I think it is a thing of beauty. And Stykkishólmur is not a big town. It has a population of just over 1,000 and is all about fishing and tourism. It is a beautiful fishing town with many buildings being good examples of traditional architecture of the area. I spent much more time there than I expected too.

The shape of this building brings to mind Thor's hammer - as you see it in jewelry/symbols/tattoos. Pretty ironic.

Sort of reminds me a little of the Kansas City Zoo's former Great Ape House that got bulldozed last year. Lovely photo!

Stykkisholmer is the town and Kirkja is a church. That's Icelandic for you.
I love their language. In fact, I love Iceland

Dunno, I don't really like the style. It's not quite as ugly as the big church in Reykjavik though. Don't get me wrong, this is nicely captured, I just can't take any pleasure in this type of architecture. : /

LawrenceCornellPhoto In reply to eegariM [2016-09-01 19:06:21 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm from a country full of beautiful historic buildings and ruins.
I find many of the new designs on Iceland quite amazing. The fact that such a small town can have a church like this is wonderful
If you compare this to some of the horrific buildings that were built in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s you might like this a little more but it is all a matter of personal taste. That's what's great about art & design.

eegariM In reply to LawrenceCornellPhoto [2016-09-01 20:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah, you are right. Most modern architecture is ugly as hell in my eyes. Especially all those steel/glas buildings or full-out concrete stuff. But in the end that's personal taste as you said. I like colorful and filigree designed architecture. Huge pillars and arches built out of concrete looks ugly to me.
