With competing entries from artists like , my own friends , and many more crazy-ass skilled artists, I was forced to push myself to the limit if I want to be competitive...
I guess such thing was good in the end, after all.

I have so much trouble with light, but you did so well! I'm jealous.

The trick is to always keep in your mind where the light come from when working, and the distance of object that casts a shadow to the corresponding surface.
The farther the distance from the object blocking the light to the surface of projection, the larger and softer the silhouette. You can see it on your arm's shadow that casts on a nearby surface. Move your arm closer to the surface, and the shadow will look sharper and crisper. Vice versa.
Also, at the place where the shadow and highlight meet, sometimes there's a visible "edge" that fades at the direction where the shadow looks darker.
Only zoom in and work the details if you feel satisfied. Otherwise, keep working at overall atmosphere and light from smaller view.
If the light is strong, some amount of it will always bleed into the foreground.
Hopefully this will help you a bit with your trouble.

If anything else, the desire to improve your art might motivate you to study, if you're still a student.
The study of light, its properties, and its interaction with matter is called optics, a branch of physics. You can try to take your teacher/professor's heart by asking them to make you understand stuffs like Rayleigh scattering, diffuse sky radiation, crepuscular/anticrepuscular ray, Heiligenschein, halos, and tons of optical phenomenon that can greatly naturalize your arts and make them look more beautiful.
Science and art goes along pretty well, and both of them enhance each other.

When I get back to school in a few weeks, I'll have a talk with my physics professor. I've only scratched the surface with waves and optics, but you've inspired me to learn more. I really love learning (though people think I'm weird when I tell them that )

Obviously, I love this pic. It's so cute. The light patches are wonderful. The cat's fur is well dont... The cat's placement, on the other hand... Well, it's a bit creepy. If that's what you were going for, mission accomplished... If, however, you weren't intending for some sort of weird vibe from the cat looking like it's snuggled up in her crotch, um, well...

Put all of your effort into it, man. A good background will definitely raise your chance since lots of entries only use simple background.
There's no limit on the amount of entries, and it closes at August 24, so there's still some time.
