Description OK, I was going to have Son of Sam, but I couldn't find anything that really looked like David Berkowitz. I'm lucky I found something mannish enough for Ken!

“Once upon a time there were three little girls who went to the police academy. And they were each assigned very hazardous duties. But I took them away from all that and now they work for me. My name is Charlie.” That was the plot to the TV show Charlie’s Angels, though he was being sarcastic about “hazardous duties”. The Angels were female cops being put on menial tasks until Charlie gave them a chance to do something more exciting. The show premiered in 1976 and featured Jaclyn Smith as Kelly Garrett, a tough yet tender lady who is proficient in both armed and unarmed combat. The pilot introduced her riding in on a motorbike.

The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts is a book written by Chinese American author Maxine Hong Kingston. In the second chapter called “White Tigers”, Kingston recounts the legend of Fa Mulan from a first-person point of view. She finishes the chapter wishing she could be as brave as Mulan so she could stand up to her racist boss. I did Mulan for my retrospective on female cartoon characters, dressing her in something akin to what she would wear to meet the matchmaker in the Disney film. Appropriately, I have her here dressed as a warrior. Kingston describes Mulan as having a white horse. Disney gave her a mostly black horse. I split the difference with a gray horse!

In 1976, India raised the legal age to be married to 21 years for a man and 18 years for a woman. The purpose was largely to curtail overpopulation. Regardless of reason, this made child marriage illegal in India. A bride in India wears red and gold with lots of jewelry, usually gifts from friends, family and soon to be in-laws. She may be decorated with temporary mehndi tattoos. The bride and groom exchange garlands of flowers to express their acceptance of each other.

Marvel’s X-Men #100 was published on August 10, 1976, written by Chris Claremont. The cliffhanger for the previous issue depicted the real X-Men facing off with doppelgangers of Professor X and the five original X-Men. The comic ended with Jean Grey (Then known as Marvel Girl) merging with the Phoenix Force. A little computer magic to get everything the right color.

Hoka Hoka Kazoku was a Japanese anime TV series that aired weekdays on the Fuji TV Network in Japan starting in October of 1976. It was a series of five-minute episodes illustrating family life in modern Japan. Midori Yamano was the young daughter.

Barbie was not having a good year in 1976. She got outsold by Cher’s doll! And for Cher (Who I’ve done twice already) that was the only good thing going for her that year. But it was a good year for Ken! Gillette was marketing a hairspray for men called “The Dry Look”. Their advertisements made men with slicked down hair (as Ken had it for years) look geeky. In response, Mattel made Now-Look Ken, who now had rooted hair that was thick and fluffy. Now-Look Ken wore a beige leisure suit and came with facial hair decals so he could have sideburns, a moustache or beard. I did a little computer magic. Now-Look Ken had some epic eyebrows!

Summer is good for star gazing. Next month will be all about the constellations. I’ve already done the Western Zodiac, so none of them will appear.
