Reminds me also of Dante vs vergil...but since there are Many hints that Nero is supposed to be vergils Son (like the Blue shadow of demon and that he can handle yamato, which normally just vergil can, also his Arm Looks a Bit like the "beowulf Weapon" the only Weapon you could also use with vergil) i Guess ist fits so well XD

No one knows who Nero is for sure, not even Capcom. They never really define the character's role so they can sell a sequel if the previous game sells good; it applies on all of them in DMC.
I consider his best fitting role would be "white hound" that belongs to virgil's allegory prophecy of future savior to true christian from corrupted church in Divine Comedy which the game is based on. But Capcom has no design of character expressing so, thus it is not intentional.
