Description
I received the news that one of the founders of my city, the Jesuit priest José de Anchieta (1534-1597), will be canonized in next April. It inspired to design a flag to tribute him.

The saint

He's nicknamed "the apostle of Brazil" and is venerated in the country and its homeland, the Canary Islands.

Anchieta's biography is curious in many aspects. Cousin of St. Ignatius of Loyola, he converted the natives not because of his genuinely didactic oratory, but also for defending them from the colonists that wanted to enslave them and capture their women and children, offered himself for hostage on a dispute between Portuguese and natives, wrote the first literary writing of the Americas (an epic poem), the Tupi grammar (only the second American languages grammar ever written) and a 4,172 verses poem dedicated to Virgin Mary.

The flag

On first and fourth quarters, his personal coat of arms as it appears on the heraldry of some Brazilian localities (namely, Santo Amaro and São José dos Campos ), with five-pointed stars substituted by eight-pointed stars (curiously, this substitution appears at least once ) because of his devotion to Virgin Mary. On second and third quarters, indian heads, representing his whole life dedicated to conversion. On the center, the symbol of the Jesuit Order.
