‘Cucurbita’, Latin for pumpkin, and the title of an illustration that came first place in the Willoughby Memorial Trust Open Art Competition back in 2002.When I think about it, I realize that I can be an extremely competitive person at times, and as such, quite relentlessly stubborn also. I had come second place in the same competition the year before, with another illustration titled ‘Midnight Ambush’ (which depicted Lance and Yolos poised with their weapons up a large tree. Unfortunately this picture was later damaged and I was unable to restore it). It was then that I swore my determination to come first the following year… and… I did.
This picture, as I remember rightly, had taken ages to complete but the end result was definitely worth it (even though I cringe at the bad anatomy now). The colours are particularly medieval looking, with rich browns, golds, reds and oranges. I had thought that, seeing as the competition is always held in the autumn, it would be nice to have a ‘fall’ theme.

Oooh, this is really nice! I love the color scheme and all the medieval detailing and patterns. I'd love to see you do an illuminated manuscript with lots of those swirls and flourishes...

Even though this was done years ago, it's still incredible. Also, since it *was* done 3 years ago, it'd be quite unfair to critique it. But, I must say that I do like the colors in this, and the sheer quality and composition of Lance manages to steal most of my attention.

*Grins* I'm glad to hear what people think of even my old artwork. I wouldn't ever be without it for sure! Btw, the prize at the time was around £60 I think. Not a lot, but I really only went in for it for the recognition... and because of my big ego inflated head of course.

Whoa. Took me a few minutes to look at this and take all the detail in.
The shield, weapons and the armor are defintitely the best parts of this drawing, well, to me at least. Although I like the crow flying across the sunset in the background XD I'm a sucker for details.
