I did very minimalistic shading in photoshop with mostly flat colors and gradients for the background, and a paper texture overlay with some tweaks here and there to make sure it didn't muddy up the colors too much

Man, Lexxy. this turned out really great. I love the different textures, and the little details. You managed to make things in the background rather detailed, but they don't draw your attention away from the main focus of the image.
The colors and the cleaness of it all is very appealing, and just the design of it is very easy on the eyes. And it's way different from what I'm used to seeing from you and it's great.

Yeah, most of what I post over at MSPA is cartoony MSPA stuff, I guess! Which is basically my fast and fun comfort zone. I feel like my development as an artist has been more or less on hold for the past several years because I haven't really had the time to dedicate myself to it or I felt like I should have been spending my time on other things, but now that I do, I'm going to be making a serious effort towards pushing the boundaries of said comfort zone and producing more serious, "realistic" work. Aside from doing my own thing, I'd really like to be able to illustrate for companies like Wizards of the Coast, and Wizards doesn't deal much with cartoony stuff. So expect to see more like this!
