Description For #DissidiaAces For Round 1 of the tournament I'm facing *Aureta 's Sice (FF-Type 0, the lady with the wicked looking scythe)) with Balthier (Final Fantasy XII), my tournament character. The setting is meant to be a generic forested part of the World Map.

The concept is to that you pick a character (you enter a choice of 3 possibles) and then face off against other Final fantasy characters in painted battle.

I haven't played Type-0. According to the Wiki, Sice is fast, but she is vulnerable at close quarters when she moves in for the kill. Balthier is off balance and trying to turn enough to catch her with a point-blank shot - but guns are slow. Who will win?

Critique very welcome, in the comments or via the official critiquing system.

One reason for entering this tournament was that I'm hoping to improve my painting of anatomy, and also trying to paint more dynamic scenes. My paintings tend to be very static, usually. I'm hoping this will be good practice. For this painting I've concentrated on these elements, and kept the colours, lighting (which I know is a bit dodgy) and background simple.

I used various dA stock photos as pose references. These include [link] by ~spiked-stock , [link] by `FantasyStock and [link] by *SenshiStock Balthier's gun and his outfit referenced from [link] by ~CaptJapan .
The background was inspired by [link] by ~mjagiellicz

In this kind of fight, I honestly don't see Balthier fighting her, or any type of woman in the first place. I can see his partner Fran on the other hand. Also Balthier wouldn't be that close if he has a ranged weapon. You would usually see him farther away, looking all cool and calm at this.

Leyna-art In reply to SexyUke [2013-05-12 00:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Really? Because I didn't see anything in FFXII to indicate Balthier had any issues with fighting women. Also, this was for a challenge to help improve painting skills (as mentioned in the notes) so I chose the more dramatic scene.

The amount of details on the characters is astonishing! =O

Paint dynamic scenes was one of the reason I joined dissidia aces too^^ (But my drawings are still kind of static XD ) I wish you good luck with your practice and with the tournament

Thank you! Hopefully this will give me lots of useful practice, as well as being fun

Good luck to you too! I've just been admiring your Round 1 entries - I wouldn't call them at all static. All the characters have so much personality and individuality, too.

I’m sure it will ^.^

Oh, thank you!! It’s so nice to hear that <3
The fact is, they are not as dynamic as I would like them to be XD I’ve always been very critic towards myself

And she is really cool. And she's really fun to play with

So that's what happened to it.....
I always did wonder what ever happened to Chakan's weapons.
Now Aureta has to collect the warhammer, battleaxe, and scythe.

Leyna-art In reply to StriderSyd [2012-08-29 13:57:17 +0000 UTC]

Not sure I get this reference ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StriderSyd In reply to Leyna-art [2012-08-31 00:24:06 +0000 UTC]

Sorry 'bout that, I'll explain.

The reference is to an old SEGA Genesis videogame called: "Chakan: The Forever Man"
It's a game so niche, that even DA has almost no art ref for it.
(It's also rather infamous for being really hard, and had no ending made).

.......Hold on a minute.....

Okay, I just did a DA search, and it seems that nowadays there are "114" Chakan related pics.
(a few of which are not related to the videogame though).
ANYWAY,
In the game you control the main character: Chakan,
and you must collect 4 special weapons to advance.
These weapons are a warhammer, battleaxe, scythe, and grapplinghook.

The scythe weapon you drew here for the "Aureta" character,
looked (to me) a lot like the grapplinghook weapon used in this game.
When I came across your pic here a few days ago,
the old memory popped up and compelled me to write my previous comment.
But I do have to admit,
it has been YEARS since I played that game
and I may be totally wrong about this whole scythe/grapplinghook weapon thing.

Ah well.

Nice talking with you.
And cool pic.

She's too close to him.
Also, a different camera angle (diagonal) would have looked better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leyna-art In reply to super-illustrator0 [2012-08-29 13:56:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the picture looked better (more dramatic) with them closer together so she has ended up too close.

Do you mean just rotating the image as it is, or actually changing the viewpoint?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

super-illustrator0 In reply to Leyna-art [2012-08-29 16:34:53 +0000 UTC]

Changing the viewpoint. Perspective is just more exciting. I see the camera banking, though. That's a plus.
Plus, it's not right to have a person with a spear swinging too closely. It's analogous to a person with a dagger who's swinging from 10 meters away.

I like it, very atmoshperic. Her pose looks right, and very dynamic (though maybe not practical, as an attack pose... that's a long swing, gives the opponent time to react). The guy's legs aren't quite right, I feel. I think his right leg is a bit too small.

Your coloring is top-notch.

What I'd suggest is more general... I'd take some time not working on fully colored pieces (since you got the coloring part down pat, really) and instead just doing pencil sketches. Anatomy, poses and drapes. Like, take a sketchbook wherever you go and do quick sketches of people and clothes. Drape some clothes over a chair and draw the folds. I also learned a lot about anatomy from some books, most notably Jeno Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist. I don't like Burne Hogarth's style but I found his book Dynamic Figure Drawing very helpful when it comes to poses.

Once you got that stuff internalized, you'll rely much less on references and the overall result will look more organic.

Leyna-art In reply to astridv [2012-08-29 13:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I definitely chose drama over practicality in her pose and I'll fix that leg.

I keep intending to spend some time sketching, particularly anatomy, though usually I get distracted by all manner of interesting challenges instead. It is great advice, though, and I'll aim to get some sketching time.

Yeah, I can see that... bit like doing pull-ups for climbing practice instead of climbing up a real wall. But in the end I found the whole anatomy study really satisfying, too. I came up with a practice method that I posted about in my LJ a while ago ([link] ). Basically you cut pics of naked (or scantily clad) people from magazines and draw in the muscles, using books on anatomy as reference. I found that worked *really* well, plus it's fun.

Leyna-art In reply to astridv [2012-09-02 08:30:50 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a great way to learn about muscles. I'll give it a try sometime. Thanks!

Personally, I think she's a goner. He has plenty of time do double her over with a shot to the belly. The question is if he can evade her blow, which she may have time to land.

Good artwork, great characters ^_^

The amount of detail in this is great! You've done a pretty good job with the poses as well, Sice looks wicked awesome and you can sense the movement in the picture without it seeming too static. I think the leg that Balthier's leaning on looks a bit on the small side, but I hardly notice it because the rest of this is so good!
