In this kind of fight, I honestly don't see Balthier fighting her, or any type of woman in the first place. I can see his partner Fran on the other hand. Also Balthier wouldn't be that close if he has a ranged weapon. You would usually see him farther away, looking all cool and calm at this.

I love both of these characters...but I'm going to have to go with Sice. She's just THAT cool.

So that's what happened to it.....
I always did wonder what ever happened to Chakan's weapons.
Now Aureta has to collect the warhammer, battleaxe, and scythe.

Not sure I get this reference ?

Sorry 'bout that, I'll explain.
The reference is to an old SEGA Genesis videogame called: "Chakan: The Forever Man"
It's a game so niche, that even DA has almost no art ref for it.
(It's also rather infamous for being really hard, and had no ending made).
.......Hold on a minute.....
Okay, I just did a DA search, and it seems that nowadays there are "114" Chakan related pics.
(a few of which are not related to the videogame though).
ANYWAY,
In the game you control the main character: Chakan,
and you must collect 4 special weapons to advance.
These weapons are a warhammer, battleaxe, scythe, and grapplinghook.
The scythe weapon you drew here for the "Aureta" character,
looked (to me) a lot like the grapplinghook weapon used in this game.
When I came across your pic here a few days ago,
the old memory popped up and compelled me to write my previous comment.
But I do have to admit,
it has been YEARS since I played that game
and I may be totally wrong about this whole scythe/grapplinghook weapon thing.
Ah well.
Nice talking with you.
And cool pic.

Thanks for the explanation! It is a cool looking weapon, in any case.

She's too close to him.
Also, a different camera angle (diagonal) would have looked better.

Yes, the picture looked better (more dramatic) with them closer together so she has ended up too close.
Do you mean just rotating the image as it is, or actually changing the viewpoint?

Changing the viewpoint. Perspective is just more exciting. I see the camera banking, though. That's a plus.
Plus, it's not right to have a person with a spear swinging too closely. It's analogous to a person with a dagger who's swinging from 10 meters away.

I like it, very atmoshperic. Her pose looks right, and very dynamic (though maybe not practical, as an attack pose... that's a long swing, gives the opponent time to react). The guy's legs aren't quite right, I feel. I think his right leg is a bit too small.
Your coloring is top-notch.
What I'd suggest is more general... I'd take some time not working on fully colored pieces (since you got the coloring part down pat, really) and instead just doing pencil sketches. Anatomy, poses and drapes. Like, take a sketchbook wherever you go and do quick sketches of people and clothes. Drape some clothes over a chair and draw the folds. I also learned a lot about anatomy from some books, most notably Jeno Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist. I don't like Burne Hogarth's style but I found his book Dynamic Figure Drawing very helpful when it comes to poses.
Once you got that stuff internalized, you'll rely much less on references and the overall result will look more organic.

I keep intending to spend some time sketching, particularly anatomy, though usually I get distracted by all manner of interesting challenges instead.
Yeah, I can see that... bit like doing pull-ups for climbing practice instead of climbing up a real wall. But in the end I found the whole anatomy study really satisfying, too. I came up with a practice method that I posted about in my LJ a while ago ([link] ). Basically you cut pics of naked (or scantily clad) people from magazines and draw in the muscles, using books on anatomy as reference. I found that worked *really* well, plus it's fun.

That sounds like a great way to learn about muscles. I'll give it a try sometime. Thanks!

Personally, I think she's a goner. He has plenty of time do double her over with a shot to the belly. The question is if he can evade her blow, which she may have time to land.
Good artwork, great characters ^_^

Thank you! Static poses are a big problem of mine so that is good to hear - and thanks for the advice about Balthier's leg. That shouldn't be difficult to fix.

This is really great! I love the expressions and the motion in the picture! I can really see how the two of them are moving.
I hope you enter the next round (because your style is beautiful and I can never get enough of Balthier ;3)!
