Actually Franquin preferred random chinese characters, explosions and wordplay. I would have made a joke about that (with Gaston confusing his curses to actual Chinese) but couldn't figure a way to make it work without explaining the joke too much.
I don't know if that's just old comics, it's still used, and why not? It's something that you can only really use in comics, and they can be a lot of fun.
