Ch. 1
The gray, cloudy sky of Elwynn forest chilled the air of Lion’s Pride Inn. Innkeeper Farley had been baking simple bread in the back, along with any other food they could gather. A straight-berry diet is not good for us Mr. Farley thought, sighing to himself. Farley inspected the room of the inn he had put his heart into. After the Blood elf attack on GoldShire, not much was left. Most of the food was taken, besides the Lion’s Pride inn’s stash that was kept in case of emergency. But now, that it was given to the defenders of StormWind and the Alliance, only a few morsels were left for them. Footsteps were heard behind the Innkeeper as he continued to bake the bread. Damn that Sylvannas. Farley turned, and he saw Tomas come in with a warm smile as always.
“I taught you well rookie” Tomas said with an innocent smile. The cooking trainer inspected the bread over the fire in the corner of the room as it bloated from the heat and yeast. Tomas smelled it and gave an approving hum.
“I’m older than you!” Farley retorted, but Tomas paid no attention to the innkeeper’s annoyed tone.
“Smells amazing,” Tomas complemented “We do need something besides berries around here.”
“I guess you’re right…” Farley said. There was a dead silence between the two friends, seeming to last for an eternity, until a sudden bell from the front of the inn chimed, announcing that someone had come inside.
“Eh?” Farley said a nervous rasp in his voice. Farley glanced at Tomas, who was looking towards the door.
“When was the last time we had someone in here?” Tomas whispered.
“Before the Invasion” Farley responded. Farley slowly walked out of the back room, and into the main room, where Toddrick, Dobbins, and Brog Hamfist were behind the bar stand, all staring at the door. Even though the golden red fire near the wall gave the room a nice feeling, it now seemed dull with the mystery and fear hanging in the air.
“I’ll go check,” Farley reassured his comrades “It’s just probably someone looking for a place to stay, and who wouldn’t”. The Innkeeper who started walking down the steps of the inn, only made it a few feet before a figure stood at the entrance.
It was looking down to its right, where beside it stood a cat figure, which appeared to be it’s pet. It was slightly hard to see the figure, and to either tell if it was male or female. The figure held a bow, with a red war axe, seemingly similar to a blood elf’s guard sword. Farley could also hear the nicker of an unknown animal outside, as if it was in pain.
A blood elf war axe, a lynx looking cat and a mysterious animal outside? Is this a blood elf?! Farley nervously pondered to himself.
“W-W-Welcome to my Inn weary traveler! W-What can I do for you?” He sputtered at the dark figure. It looked up from its pet, and stared at Farley with seemingly unforgiving eyes. Farley gulped and took the smallest step backwards as it slowly approached. Now at the bottom of the far steps and Farley at the bottom of the steps nearest to the back, he braced himself for an attack, but only a light and forceful voice was heard.
“Oh! yes… um….” the female voice said pulling back her hood to reveal her golden hair. Farley was shocked at who this was. It was an old fighter who often stayed at the Inn, and knew him. It had been many years that he had seen her since the first Blood Elf attack, but now, without any more of her friends or allies, she came to the Inn to maybe stay with a friend for a little while longer. Before he could ask her why she was here, the whole place jumped on her, weapons raised. She didn’t move, but only to put herself over the cat that was beside her; to protect it.
“We got you now you blood elf witch!” Toddrick howled at her, his butcher knife in hand ready to attack. Mere seconds before she was about to be slaughtered, a loud yell was heard.
“STOP!!!” Farley yelled. Immediately his workers stopped and stood attention. The men gave weird looks at each other then gave a glance at Farley.
“What’s wrong? It a blood elf! They destroyed our home!” Dobbins spat angrily, seething with hate.
“Yeah?! What’s up with you Farley?” Hamfist added, clutching the simple wood he held for the assault on the girl. Farley raised his hand for silence, and all was quiet except for the chirping of the morning birds.
“This is an old friend of mine. She was the deputy of the first Blood Elf attack.” Farley stated. The men gave a surprised look in awe of the girl in front of them. She stared at Farley, questioning his knowledge.
“My name is Eartherna” She said, a small but slightly frightened smile on her face. She pulled back the remainder of her hood to reveal her human like features, including the mouth, nose and eyes in the right place.
“No elf ears here!” She joked, as she shook their hands, wishing them well. She turned to Farley while she held out her hand to him.
“Hello old friend ^^” Eartherna smiled with a sweet smile. Eartherna’s hand was clutched in his, as friends reunited, and then pulled her hand away.
“I would like to purchase some water” she said, keeping her distance. Farley eagerly went to the back and grabbed a glass bottle full of water along with a blanket. The blanket was a beautiful royal purple, with golden trim and an inscription of ‘LIFE’ in the corner. Eartherna took the water, but when the blanket was given to her she looked puzzled.
“Just as a present” he paused “you know since I haven’t seen you in a while.” Farley smiled.
“Well thanks, I um… just wanted to say goodbye before I had to go.” She stated averting her eyes from his to pet her now distinguishable snow leopard, who purred as her hand touched his head.
“Goodbye? Where are you going?” Farley asked nervously, trying to get her to look at him again.
“Oh, um there is going to be a revenge assault, and I was voted for deputy again. So, I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye… in case…” she paused “in case I don’t come back.” Farley’s eyes opened wide at her accepting her own death. Eartherna looked towards the door and then lowered her eyes to the ground looking at Ice (her snow leopard), her profile facing the men. She smiled in a sad way and turned towards the door.
“Bye” Eartherna said, hand raised up as she ran out of the Inn. ‘The mysterious animal’ was her chestnut horse. She quickly mounted, stuffing the bottle and bag into the saddle pack, and cantered in the direction of StormWind, where her leader and team awaited. Farley, shocked, ran out of the Inn to see if she was still there, but when the dust cleared, she was already gone, and all that was heard was the chirping of the morning birds.

Eartherna looked behind her to see the dust come up like a sandstorm. She continued to canter up the brownish cobblestone path, and let her mind wander as she watched the lanterns speed past her on the old fences. The bushes had grown over cracks in between the outskirts of the path, reminding her of how much time has past since the first Blood Elf Attack. When she brought her horse back to a slow trot, she went past the cliff that surrounded StormWind. A few guards were on the top. When they noticed her, they slighted muffled something to each other, then left, probably to tell King Varian Wynn of the deputy’s arrival. As she trotted up to the gate, some waved to her, and so did she in return. As she walked to Cathedral Square were the rest of the group would meet, she pondered.
The First, Second, and Third wars were brutal. Why do we fight? Heh… I guess I can’t even ask myself that question… I mean, I’m going to die right? Eartherna sighed and started to canter again through the Trade District, and then into the Cathedral Square, where a bunch of StormWind guards with King Varian on a Armored White Horse and one of her best friends that were in her assault group, Somaria the Worgen, awaited.
“Hey there my non-fuzzy buddy!” Somaria waved in her normal laid back mood.
Eartherna smiled and dismounted then walked over to Somaria. She was standing near the large fountain looking onto the Cathedral of Light. Somaria ran up and gave her a hug, most of her shed fur getting all over her face and armor.
“H-Hi Somaria…!” Eartherna managed to say while getting squeezed by her furry friend. Somaria finally let go of the golden-haired human and stepped back, her toothy grin glowing even in the gray light. Eartherna blew off the fur all over her and smiled in return.
“So I can’t believe you we’re voted again for deputy,” she commented “I wish I wasn’t just the top fighter” Somaria said in a puffy voice, bloating her black furry cheeks out in defiance. Eartherna placed her hand on her chest in an apologetic way because she knew Somaria LOVED the Draenei culture.
“Sorry about that” Eartherna apologized. Somaria’s eyes instantly lit up. She bounced around saying something in Draenei. Eartherna just giggled as her friend didn’t notice her trying to get her attention. As Somaria kept herself busy, Eartherna walked over to Varian who was to her right, and bowed in respect. He looked down on her (and rightfully so, ‘cause, you know, he IS a king). Eartherna shifted her wait beneath her as she felt his burning gaze on her, but it slowly melted away as he turned away.
“Attention Deputy, you should be fighting, not on your knees” Varian said with his deep, heroic voice. Eartherna immediately stood attention to the King, showing as much respect as she could. He looked down on her and slightly smiled. Eartherna did not cease to stand attention, but managed to give a faint smile before it vanished as he looked away to the Cathedral of Light, his gaze clouded in grief of some sort. Eartherna looked at him and with sympathy, and she started talking.
“Y-Your Majesty, is everything alright?” she questioned, his gaze not moving from the Cathedral. He did not answer formally, but he started to murmur something.
“Tiffin Ellerian Wrynn, Queen of StormWind, fair and just. A wit as quick as her smile. May-” Without thinking, Eartherna continued his words, cutting him off.
“-the Light inherit your warmth. For our world grows cold in your absence.” Eartherna said. Varian snapped a glare at her, seemingly offended. Eartherna realized this and she bowed again.
“I’m so sorry sir; I apologize a thousand times over!” Eartherna said her eyes clenched shut while her head was downward. When she thought he would lose her position as deputy, she braced her self for the scolding but he placed his hand on her shoulder. Eartherna stood up a small amount enough to see his face, which wore a warm smile like a new shirt.
“Thank You” he whispered. Eartherna stood up, and looked him in the eyes, that still had the haze of grief, but a certain comfort to them. His gaze drifted over to the entrance of Cathedral Square where a young blonde haired man came out, seemingly a priest, and about 17-20 years of age. Eartherna saw him and at least to her, he was (>/////0) kind of handsome. His young face sort of hypnotized her, and she found herself blushing before him, who had walked up. Eartherna realized it was Prince Anduin Wrynn. She immediately bowed as he walked up, who had started a conversation with the King.
“Hello Father and Deputy” the Prince said. Eartherna looked up blushing. Varian smiled and before he had a chance to say a word, Anduin continued “I should get straight to the point Father, do you think it is a good idea for you to go? I mean, I lost you before, I don’t want to lose you again.” This phrase was said with seemingly no emotion. He stared at his father, his eyes determined, but as a counter, Varian was extremely relaxed. Eartherna stood again, took a step back and silently listened.
“Son, our world has to do this and we need to focus. Peace is not always the answer. There has never been a good war or a bad peace. But, the world needs to change, doesn’t it my son.” Varian swiftly said, denying his son’s words. Anduin clenched, with his eyes at the floor. Varian didn’t move with his action. Sighing, Anduin gave in.
“Yes father. But I tell you. If you die, I promise I’ll be king” Varian said this and then turned away, walking back out of the Square with a few guards on his way back to StormWind Keep. Varian sighed as he looked down at Eartherna, still being loyal to the man on the white horse.
“Sorry, he just…” he paused “he just misses Valeera”. Eartherna knew of this name. She was the blood elf who taught Young Anduin how to knife. She was banished as for being a suspect of taking part in the Blood Elf Attack. Eartherna clenched because she didn’t know how to think of that blood elf. She looked up at him, who didn’t turn in return; he was still staring at the exit. Eartherna saluted and stiffly walked back over to Somaria, who was staring at her spiked Axe out of boredom. Eartherna patted Ice, and fed him a piece of boar meat, which earned her a loving lick on her cheek.
“Yo!” Somaria said as Eartherna came over for the second time. Eartherna sighed and sat down next to Somaria. Somaria offered Eartherna a piece of bread, and she took it gladly, because Somaria could travel to get food from Gilneas. Eartherna noticed how thin some of them were from the lack of food. Even Ice was looking a bit thin. Eartherna’s hate grew at that moment and she vowed to herself she would get more food from the blood elves, and keep Varian at the throne.
“Hey, what’s up?” Somaria asked, inching closer to hear her better. Eartherna closed her eyes and sighed.
“I’m such a sucker for blondes” Eartherna said.
