No, Snape is 1000% a cat person, I'm sure. Dog people are almost never grouchy and solitary (far as I've seen). But if the right dog came along, you know.

I guess it could work. I've seen dogs that behave like cats and cats that behave like dogs.Β

I'm a cat person, 10000%, but my husband's a dog person, so we have both. Our last dog was a shar-pei with the temperament of a cat. He was quiet and independent, sort of grouchy except around his favorite people. Not real cuddly but loved a good scratch. And the cats walked all over him. Miss that poocher. Now we've got a sloppy little pitbull mutt with a big dumb smile who's jealous of the attention the baby gets. Wants to be friends with everyone. He's the world's greatest dog, but he annoys the heck out of me, ha ha.

I'm the kind of person who can go either way with pets. I've had both dogs and cats growing up. I've also had fish, snails, tarantulas, bunnies, birds, and even a snake.
At the moment I just have one pet, a Jack Russell terrier named Jitterbug. He is pretty wild.

Ay, that's really cool! My family has had all those except birds & tarantula, tho my sister would have been happy with one, I think. How old was your spider? What was its temperament like? What breed? I used to look after the rose tarantula in my HS science class and always felt bad that nobody would pet her (including me). I just couldn't do it.

I think mine was a rose tarantula too. I'm not sure how old he was though, I actually caught him wild creeping through the laundry room (did I mention I was living in California at the time?) Mom confirmed it was male, we named him Houdini because he kept escaping from his terrarium.
He was quite docile. He would walk around the table, and sit on my shoulder, he ate crickets and wood lice, Houdini was pretty mellow though my Dad hated that spider (Dad was so scared of spiders it was funny. He would tell about how he hunted bears with his brothers but show him a little spider and he'd run up the walls).Β
I kept Houdini for only a few months and trained him for the Coarsegold tarantula races (we didn't win), and I took him trick-or-treating on Halloween. I returned him to the wild before it got too cold, and to spare my Dad from seeing the empty terrarium and having a heart attack.Β

I get a sense of restfulness and content from this picture. I like the clean lines of his suit and the turn of the shoes. The table made from a stool and all his best books is charming. I think you got the dog perfectly--it's a caricature of sorts, emphasizing the way tall dogs stretch in order to get petted *just so*. New fave!

Considering the Saluki breed's "personality", this actually a great choice for Snape. They are the most cat-like of dogs, choosing to emotionally tie themselves to only one person and capable of great devotion. They are sight hounds and once fixed on their goal, they will reach it or die trying. Great dogs.
Snape is a fascinating person, as written. He's even more interesting when you take the scraps of personality we are gifted with and flesh them out into a whole.
This is a lovely work. Thank you for sharing.

I didn't know that about Salukis! I'm definitely a cat person, and I have trouble relating to my husband's scrappy little mutt. Our last dog was a Shar Pei who was unusually catlike, too. Makes me think I'd like a Saluki, but you don't see many of those in shelters.

You might try Saluki Rescue.Β
saluki.rescueme.org
They would have more information, not to mention local to you contacts. I have worked in dog and animal rescue for way too many years to count. It's a shame what happens to some of those poor critters and good people are always needed. Good luck - and you might try some basic training with the scrappy pooch. It gets the two of you "talking" and could lead to better things. I recommend clicker training, since that involves lots of small treats, a "clicker", and small intervals (no more than 5 minutes) of time.
Free advice is just that - take it or not...
Best of all thoughts.Β

I have serious doubts that Saluki Rescue would have a chapter here on Oahu, but you never know. Even then, we're always going to choose a dog from our local (and severely underfunded) SPCA. But that's good to know that there are lots of specialized rescue organizations!
As for me and my dog, he's even better at listening to my commands than my husband's, it's just that I've never been a dog person. But we get along. We respect each other's boundaries, ha ha.

I'm such a fan of your various Snape arts. And Splendid Table is awesome, thanks for the link to the podcasts! I can't travel in my car without NPR. Are you a fan of Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor? The silliness makes me happy.

I have normally never been attracted to Snape, but for some reason the way you draw him is quite sexy. I have always adored your style of art and I hope you keep making not so attractive men sexy (you know what I mean.)

I've never favorited anything so quickly in my life! @_@ My favorite animal? My favorite fictional professor/HP character? From someone else who thinks poor old Snape deserves peace and love and affection, and definitely should've had a dog? Wow. I'm amazed. Every part of this looks absolutely beautiful and heartwarming, and all of the aforementioned facts make it all the more awesome to me personally. A Saluki would definitely be a most appropriate choice of pet for him (speaking both objectively and from experience, as a guardian of one!)
Magnificent...:*}

I love it! I love the huge stack of books and how Snape's tea is just sitting on top of them. My favorite parts artistically in this are your amazing lighting of his black outfit - it looks black but there are highlights and shadows throughout, and the little design behind his head. It eats up that blank space but also kind of hints at the kind of decorative wallpaper I imagine Snape having.

lily-fox In reply to kerrikat [2011-09-14 05:01:07 +0000 UTC]
If Snape had wallpaper, we'd probably never see it -- I think every inch of available wall space is taken up with bookshelves. Which is charming, in a way. And thank you! Oh man, I hate coloring with black, but I worked out a system for Snape, since that's all he wears.

Oh, no I don't mind, but it's nothing special. I just put layers of black over dark greys, and then erase where I want the light to come through. Seems effective!

Heh, bishie Snape is funny to me. Funny, but also pretty goddamn tiresome. I feel bad, but 99β of the time, I don't give anime the time of day. I'm like, if you've got talent, don't blow it on something any fool could draw.
