Wow this is coooool! Cant wait to see it finished! And you can really mold and cast this? Even though its a lot of bends and knicks and the likes? I have made heads in sculpey but Im scared of making molds for them. Afraid the sculpted heads will get damaged. I mean, like those teeth of yours, how on earth can you make a mold for them so they stay like that?

LimitlessEndeavours In reply to Escaron [2013-08-23 23:05:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! ^^ Yes, i can mold that - i am preparing the head along with another project later today so i can cast over the weekend. I don't know yet what type of mold i will use for the head - because of the teeth ^^ So i will play around later and see what works.

It is not difficult to make molds of heads - if you just prepare it right. The only thing that can happen is, that you are scratching the master sculpt with your knife (using a one-part mold) when you are demolding. Others than that nothing bad should happen. If you are planning to mold and you have questions, just let me know.

I am planing to mold (have planed it for about a month but not dared to do it haha) and I have like... ONE MILLION questions! XD Naah, not exactly, but I have never molded/casted or anything before and Im not sure how to do anything. I have a head made out of super sculpey  right now (more like a face, not entire head), and thats all. I need to take form of that so that I can make copys and Ive heard that latex is a good thing to use but more than that... Im lost. I wanted to make copys of feet as well but havnt dared that either. Its because I dont get how it really work that Im afraid it will ruin the sculpey head when I "mess with it" trying to make a form.

To be honest Im not even sure if I understand the terms right (I blame my swedish stupidness XD), molding = to make a form from something? Its when you put a head in for instance latex and get a print that you later use to make copys? Or? But then what is "to cast"?

So sorry I ask you so much. If you dont have time to answer you totally dont have to. Im very thankful for everything you have helped me with this far.

First, you are not stupid  You just have no experience.

I use silicone rubber for my molds. I haven't worked with latex ^^

Molding means, you make a form (a negative) of the object you want to copy. Remember the christmas chocolate calendars where you open a door everyday? www.wdr5.de/fileadmin/user_upl… The plastic, where the chocolate is in, is the negative -> the mold. The chocolate is the cast -> the copy! Casting means basically copying - to pour the liquid material in the form (mold) and produce so a copy. (I really hope you have chocolate calendars in Sweden )

I plan to do another livestream session showing to mold and cast - this time just about an hour. The date and time will be announced here on DA, you can stop by and watch me working. Otherwise i can offer you help via Skype, watching what you are doing be there to help with the first steps.

Let me know if you have any more questions, i'm always glad to help!

Hahaha,  love that emoticon! Love how the grumpy dude is only staring at the other thinking:

"What..?

...

...

Seriously?

...

Why are you touching me?

.... Why?"

I think Ive stared at it for a whole minute now, giggling.

AHA! Thank you so much now, I completely understand! That was some great explanation! And we sure have chocolate calendars! In fact I buy one every year still, even if Im not a kid anymore. Its tradition and fun.

Since you are using silcone rubber Im guessing it is good. (Looking at your awesome dolls I say it is. ) Would you recommend me buying that?

I hope I can attend your LS because that would be completely awesome! To see for my own eyes how its done. I will keep my both eyes wide open for you to announce it! And guidance through Skyping would be super!!!

But I must ask, do you really have time to help me? I cant help but feel I steal away on your time. And that I dont wanna do. So you should know that if you are busy I completely understand. You have helped me so much already, Im truly and utterly thankful! In truth I think its almost unbelivable (and wonderful) how much you wanna help and tell how its done, because most artist in the doll trade wanna keep it to themselves. It even feel a little wrong to ask, almost like Im prying. So yeah, I can never tell you enough how happy I am that you help me like this. x 1000!

Could I maybe send you a WIP pic of the heads Ive made? You could maybe give me a opinion, if you think they will be moldable or if theres problem parts? (Once again, only when/if you have got the time.)

Thank you again and again and AGAIN!!!

Yupp, chocolate calendars are a must-have!

Thanks! Silicone rubber works perfect, i would recommend to use it. Take a look at smoothon.com  or google out what company sells molding material in your country!

Yes, i have time to help. Mostly i'm sitting in front of my computer (can't leave it alone) and i'm skyping often while working. I am a helpful person - I am self thought in everything i do and i know how difficult it is sometimes to figure things out. I'm not a selfish person who keeps "secrets" - the process of doll making or whatever is no secret, it just requires a little bit talent to do that job. A lot of artists do that too though - except for the skype-guidance. Look at Riley (CanineHybrid), Emily (EmilySculpts), Remjie (RemjiesDolls) they are all sharing information, because it's fun to help ^^

Yes, leave me a note with the pictures and i get back to you about the possibilities!

Welcooome

I havnt bought my molding and casting stuff yet. I sat several hours only browsing through what felt like one hundered different silicone rubbers and another hundred casting materials, and this resin doesnt even have a swedish term, except the gluey stuff that come out of trees - wich I dont think is right. I dont even know where to start, how will I ever be able to find the best product? And I cant afford making the misstake to buy wrong materials. And annoying enough as Im not good in this field its hard to get a grip of the explanations they give about the products and its uses, I mean Im usually good at english but this kinda feel like learning a new language. (Even in swedish really) And if I buy this silicone I should buy that super great thing as well, wich goes with that and that and that, and maaan this is a nightmare.

And I really think I must get it from abroad because the stuff I found in sweden is suuuuuuuuper mega much more expensive. (as with everything in sweden ) Im sorry for the rant but I just feel uterly confused right now. And then I got the brilliant idea to look at your streams to see what you use - and my net conection is really so bad that I cant load them. Maybe Im just not meant to make molds. Hahaha.

On a side note I hope you´re having a great weekend!

Alright, i see you need to be rescued  First of all: relax

Here is a starter kit (mold) that you can use. It is the same material i use - only in smaller size. It's called Mold Star ® 15 - Trial Unit www.smooth-on.com/Silicone-Rub… The first product on the list.

Here is a starter kit (resin). I haven't used this resin before, but it should be perfect for your purpose! It's called Smooth-Cast 300 - Trial Size www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Pla… Also the first one on the list.

Here is a tutorial where you can see how it works: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu7vpo…

Do not overjoy yet: They write on their homepage, they only accept online orders from the US - but you should call them www.smooth-on.com/contact_us.p… see if you can order from sweden in some way. Please ask if shipping to your country is general possible. (because of hazardous materials) Let them know what materials you are going to purchase.

I know, it is not easy, you can also google out special effect or film prop making companies in your country and ask them where to find molding/casting materials as a beginner! Or search in youtube with keywords in your language - maybe something comes up and the people in the video say what company they use

Have you contacted other artists from Sweden on deviantART? Maybe they know an answer too!

And remember: relax

Thank you, I feel I really needed to be reminded to relax.

So I got a answer from the people at the "mask pro making company" (yeah they call themselves that) aaand they hadnt anything of what I needed. Nothing even close to it. They had something similar to Mold Star 15, but it was 10 so I guess its softer? But no casting material, and neither have I had any luck with other companies. Or youtube clips. I got some tips about a material called jesmonite wich turn rock solid but is so heavy that the doll pretty much will break your floor if you drop them. XDDD Seriously, I think moving to the US would be easier than trying to find supplies in sweden. Hahaha. Ive got a friend who moved away some years ago to a prop making school and now Im hopping she may be able to enlight me some. ^^ Its rather wierd because I have a lot of artist conections, having gone to such high schools and courses but none of them sculpt like this, so they dont know either. Maybe this is really something that isnt done in Sweden. Bummer!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LimitlessEndeavours In reply to Escaron [2013-09-26 16:55:19 +0000 UTC]

No problem!

I don't think the material is softer. It must have something to do with the grade of stretching or pot life - I don't know.

Yupp, here in the US i had my hands for the first time on molds and resin. In Germany i had no chance either..
