Description I had a lot of affection for girl Ranma growing up, even going so far as to ship her with Akane exclusively. I wanted to draw fanart as I really have just been drawing Entirely Random People for just about years now, and as I was doodling Ranchan burst forth onto the digital canvas. Hooray!

I would continue to shade and even highlight this, I tend to get overly carried away so I stopped here for the good of everyone really. Drawn, inked and colored today, it was my personal goal for the day to take something from nothing to finished in one day, and I will try to do that more often going forward.

Apologies for pronoun confusion, what I mean is I ship male Ranma in a female body with Akane.

Why? Ranma hates his female form and both Ranma and Akane are straight... XD

Well, they're in a Japanese 80s-90s comedy manga, so overtly confident statement of anybody's sexuality or gender identity in a heavily gender binary culture like Japan's is a bold move indeed. Given the nature of many works to propose overtly ridiculous situations in order to bring about what are at the time socially unacceptable situations, couching feelings and opinions on taboo topics in the realm of fantasy so they may be discussed, it doesn't seem far fetched to suspect some of this from a comic that deals a lot with romance between people who can literally change gender and even features supporting characters who cross dress. Being a long time fan of Rumiko Takahashi's work, it is not uncommon for her to use and abuse the gender binary, though whether it's because she's disgusted by non-traditional gender and sexual identities but finds cross-dressing easy humor, or because she has had conflicted feelings on gender and sexuality that she deals with using humor (and it can be both!), it's not for me to assume. She did state in an interview that she wasn't married because she wasn't interested in marriage, and when asked later in the same interview what she'd do if she was suddenly turned into a man, she responded "marry a woman", which resonated with younger me pretty hardcore.

Anyway, we each take what we like from works: I personally relate to Akane who, in the manga at least, hates boys vehemently but immediately warms up to girl Ranma before finding out about the curse and his true form, and since reading the manga in my teens I've always felt the "path of least resistance" for a happy Ranma/Akane relationship would be girl Ranma and Akane. I don't create lesbian/trans headcanons for every property, to consider other Takahashi manga, my shipping goes pretty much right on canon lines with Inu-Yasha/Kagome, Lum/Ataru, I even sometimes ship Ryoga/Akane because teen me thought Ryoga was very sweet and Akane actually liked him without abjectly hating him for being a guy. Shipping isn't like a die on this hill thing for me, I like exploring different scenarios and possibilities for different characters to find happiness.

Who says it has to be either of those two?
She could just see it as easy humour, period.
No need to dig deeper then you have to.

Akane didn't really "warmed up" to female Ranma.
Just mistook him for a full girl at first (before finding out about his curse), which given the circumstances is understandable.
I feel Akane warms up to male Ranma alot more through-out the series.
When alone, they are even at several times about to kiss, just getting interrupted right before they actually do and them going back to both of their natural extremely proud personalities
(basically to keep up appearances to up hold their own pride and their own self image).
But at the end of the Anime, they definitely seem to generally genuinely accepted each other as fiancΓ©e ^^''

Right, one way or the other they're a cute couple.

Though Ranma considers himself very much a guy.

And Akane doesn't see herself having a romantic relationship with a girl.

Still gonna ship them because I find it cute, since they're fictional characters and neither of us is the author, we are free to draw our own conclusions and read what we like from the source material.
