Description Had a few days of Del Toro film-watching (mostly Hellboy), stuffing my eyeballs with some of that warm rich world-building while trying to do some character and set design. This is neither - it's a by-product - but it's certainly stolen from Del Toro.

This is really beautiful. The environment is nice and filled. The color choices are very effective and vintage. Great Job!

Vintage is my byword, after all.

Lovely work! I really enjoyed the Hellboy movies, I can see where the aesthetic came from

Very atmospheric, nice colour choices there. :3
The saturated fire light really helps draw the eye across the picture.

Danke. I'm trying to make layer effects my slave at the moment (it's so much easier than painting all that stuff traditionally.)

A very entertaining image.

The style reminds me a little of Rowland Emett?

Just a bit, but not intentionally. I do love ridiculous steampunkish inventions and fiddly little details, though I hardly ever draw them.

SUBLIME!

I love that you chose to use only warm golden hues on this.
The colors do a lot to make this image stand out against all the other Deviations on this site.
(That, and there's not a single naked breast in this pic! LOL)

The concept is quite interesting, you can't help but be pulled into this picture.

I found myself gazing at his papers, wondering aloud to myself what he could possibly be working on that would have him wracking his brain in such a way.
Clocks maybe?
He seems to have surrounded himself with them, so that would make sense!

Anyways, there's NO WAY possible that I can tell you how much I LOVE this image.
You did a magnificent job!

Danke, danke. I naturally use a warm palette for whatever I'm working on (which is why I've never done a picture of the sea).

Clocks would be a good guess; I have to admit, the idea of someone obsessively collecing and designing clocks plugged right in to my steampunk aesthetic, but if you look closely and ignore the botched linework, he's putting a mystery mechanism inside the body of a bird.

Thank you so much for giving me a bit of insight into your picture. <3
So that's the thing on top of his workdesk he's working on, some kind of mechanism that he's putting inside the body of a bird?

You've got quite a vivid imagination to have come up with something like that!

How do you think said "mystery mechanism" would work?

It's alright; doing detail blurbs feeds my ego. Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what yer referring to on to top the desk, but there's a cabinet replete with eldritch philters, a few belts, a screwdriver &c, a very poorly-drawn rag and a bunch of books with the perpective out. Of course, you could be referring to the actual bird itself, in which case your question is answered.

I'd imagine that this mechanism would allow the bird to fly about the upper reaches of this bloke's home during storms, attracting lightning and thereby powering any experiments that may be forthcoming. Of course, its extended wingspan is fitted with mirrors so that unwanted visitors can be warned of with the judicious application of super-concentrated sunlight.

Doodads make me happy too. As long as they're mainly constructed from brass and gears.

OMG, yussssssssss. I like it when they have lots of little bits that are curly too. And the brassy colour scheme is always a winner for me. :flails: It's so steampunky and cool =3

Yes! Gears and pipes and little detailing are like visual jelly and ice cream to me.
