Description ex-pect-ant
–adjective
1. having expectations; expecting: an excited, expectant audience.
2. pregnant; expecting: an expectant mother.
3. characterized by expectations: an expectant attitude.
4. in expectation; expected; prospective: an expectant fortune.
–noun
5. a person who expects or who waits in expectation.

Is she expectant of child?
Is she expectant of someone to come to her?
Is she expectant of something more grand to happen?
Is she expectant of a change that will impact her in more ways than she can imagine?
Is she expectant that she will have disappointed someone... somewhere...?
Is she expectant of a punishment that she knows she cannot escape?

Only time will reveal her fate...

Special thanks go out to Oibyrd, who featured this piece in her August 24, 2006 Journal (Part 1) !

Every aspect of the piece is intentional and the piece is finished (or at least it's not a Work In Progress, who knows if I might tweak it a bit). I've used a black background for two reasons, instead of laying her in a field of grass as I had originally envisioned: first, to draw attention only to her and less on where she might be and secondly, to make the viewer themselves slightly expectant, perhaps hoping for more information about her and feeling the same unease that she is probably feeling.

I've turned on Advanced Critique... please do so without fear of offending me.

For closeups, see: Expectant Closeups in my Scraps !
For a comparison of this piece with lighter skin tone, per deviant suggestion, see: "Comparison of 'Expectant' Tone" in my Scraps !

Expectant is not a photograph, it's a painting...

I rarely give permission to others to use my art work, but I would need to know more about what exactly it is that you want to do with it before I gave you a final answer.

Did you actually digitally "paint" this from scratch..
Or did you manipulate a photograph?
Thanks.

Thank you. It's sometimes weird for me to say that I love it so much, since it's a self-portrait of sorts and I don't want to seem narcissistic, LOL, but the piece means so much to me and is filled with so much emotion...

Ya know, IMO it shows a ton of personal strength, esp in todays society of "never being good enough" to have so much respect for yourself to find yourself beautiful.

I know how hard it is, and not many women esp are COMFORTABLE enough to make ANY form of art of themselves, let alone be proud of it. I think it's a great self portrait, and it shows a lot of self strength, and personal passion. It being you, and not "some random model" only makes it worth more in the way of art.

You're not only able to express yourself in a profound way that anyone can see (and feel), but you are secure enough, even if uneasy about it to use yourself as a model. I have great respect for that *G*

well seeing as you have invited me to comment on your work, I think this is a stunning piece of art, so touching the way it represents fertility and the grace of womanlyhood to me, being a big girl myself it certainly shows me the beauty of curves and just how warm & loving those curves can look.
I think that you dont need to lighten the skin, it fits very nicely with the juxtaposition of human and angel against the dark background. I find it also very sensual and moving, thankyou for enlightening me with your ideas and im finding that I cant stop looking at it hehe its just so easy on the eye and the mind, easily evoking thoughts and emotions.

That's the second time I had a request to lighten up the skin... take a look at this comparison and tell me what you think. And I hope it's not bad of me to say that I am in love with this piece, especially since it's based off of a self-portrait... I don't want to be thought of as conceited, but there is something about the imagery that is just stunning to me.

This is beautiful..
A non Media-Esque Portrait of Someone trying to find certainty and confidence in herself. Sort of.. Like a battle, or a race. You Express A lot of emotions through the painting; You can also see through the expression on her face, Kind of.. either frustration or Concentration almost, Of a sort of pure emotion. All bound together.
When I first browsed your shot, I thought it was a Photograph. I was Horribly Mistaken as this is an absolutely gorgeous work of art. I hope one day I get to see the real thing.
Dont ever quit.

Now I know what angels look like when they're born.

This is absolutely stunningly beautiful! So much vulnerability. I've never seen an angel that I've felt the need to protect before.

This painting gave me as a viewer so very much. Thank you.

First off, this is an incredible digital painting, simply increcible work to make it so photogenic. AS for symbolism it seems to be an innocence of the angel, surrounded by blackness, perhapes lost in the darkness yet with fear (fetal position) or comfort in the position with a face of serenity. An beautiful naked innocence comfortably lost in the darkness.

lisolettegilcrest In reply to godzillasmash [2006-06-12 22:52:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your compliments! And your interpretation is definitely the start of the things I hoped to convey... you mentioned you felt it was extraordinarily photogenic... can you define why? Are there particular elements?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

godzillasmash In reply to lisolettegilcrest [2006-06-13 05:20:54 +0000 UTC]

I"ve done some paintings and the hardest part is large areas of smooth tones. It is difficult to get it just right and as clean as you've done on the body. It's the most subtle tones that really make it work so well. And yes, it is very photo-realistic. Looking at it closer or in more detail really makes me appreciate the work even more so. Again it is a really really incredible piece and a very beautiful work of art.

lisolettegilcrest In reply to godzillasmash [2006-06-13 07:10:18 +0000 UTC]

You know what's funny? I struggled with the shading, especially along my thighs and back and would continue working on it (and probably messing it up) if I didn't have *some* self-restraint, LOL.

Thank you for the specific critique, it really helps me in recognizing some strengths and also to know what others enjoy seeing!

Yea I agree--the body needs more shadowing def, because the wings seem a bit ackward....esp where they attach to the body.

When I hear expectant, I think of being pregnant So that is the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture. Plus she is in a fetal position, so one could think that this is a representation of an upcoming birth of some sort...wether it is a physical birth, or simply a mental so to speak....like the model is waiting to be born into a new light of confidence, one where she doesn't have to hide her face and can spread her wings with pride

Or you could say that the reason she is hiding is because people expect too much out of her? eh.. no. I like my first explanation. More symbolic and beautiful

lisolettegilcrest In reply to Lex-Jude [2006-06-11 22:49:02 +0000 UTC]

As I mentioned to Burgeth, I've tried out a different tonality with the skin in "Comparison of 'Expectant' Tone" in my Scraps , but still liked the original better.

As far as your interpretation, you're almost exactly right... with all of your explanations... and you've only begun to chip at the iceberg...

I wanted overly critical... and I was open to the suggestion, I just didn't think it added to the piece.

Burgeth [2006-06-11 06:02:40 +0000 UTC]

I find this to be a very interesting shot. Taking a closer look I was unsure if it was a manipulated photo, or an extremely talented photoshop work. I belive the color of the body is the weakness of the photo. I belive if you lightened the skin to be just a little whiter it would tie in a little better to the surroungins. I very much like this shot however, and hope that you continue to put out works.

I carefully considered your suggestion and even put it to the test... you can see the comparison here at "Comparison of 'Expectant' Tone" in my Scraps !

I have to say, though, based on what I was hoping to convey with this piece, I think I still prefer the darker skin tone shades... it is part of what the piece does... you are "expectant" that the angel would look a certain way...

p.s. I LOVE your signature...

i see so much uncertainty and fear... not knowing where ones come from, or where ones been... only that she exists in this moment and becoming a hudled mass is the only desire...the faded wings, the faded hair... all coming from the darknes into the breif light

beauty from the darkness, fear in the light
