Description I love this guy!
Made for one of my Facebook competition winners, who so happens to be the head organiser of the market I went to in August and the one I will be going to in October. I really hope she will love him as much as I do.

The steampunk ones were meant to be a series just for Geek Fest, as I thought that the genre would fit in well there, but I have way too much fun figuring out how to place all the little embellishments that I don't think I will stop.

The market in October is aimed at equestrians so I will have to make many ponies from now!

After baking he was selectively glazed with glossy varnish on his horns, eyes and gears.

Made of polymer clay. Approximately 4cm in length.

I actually have mixed feelings about this one. I like the steampunk element, but in my opinion, it feels a little "slapped on." to me. I think maybe you should plan your SteamPunk ones a little more. I say that because while I like this one, I think you could do better. I think even if you went all out on the steampunk it'd look really cool and cute. This one doesn't really make any sense, why are there some gears and stuff stuck all over him but it doesn't look like he has any actual mechanical components to his body? I think to really engrain the steampunk element into your dragrons instead of just kinda on top of them some like "steampunk cyborg dragon" thing might work best. That's just my opinion though.

He was actually meant to have completely mechanical wings, but I don't like how they turned out, so I opted for the black wing frame rather.

Hmmm I see. Then like I said maybe plan more thoroughly. You're talking to a guy who practically makes mechanical creatures, so to me its a bit more irksome. I suggest you change the actual shape and color schemes of things next time, try more boxy metal looking wings that look like they have a hinge element where the wings frames would bend. And segue that to the natural element with a square like nozzle like shape with little tiny bolts so it looks like the wing assembly attaches to some internal skeletal part.

Its pretty gruesome to imagien but with things like this where mechanical components replace organic, you kinda have to imagine the loss of a limb and replacement with a prosthetic. Unless you're going for some kind of "it natrually grows like that' kind of vibe, which with the Steam Punk element I don't think meshes too well. But hey Steam Punk Prosthetics can still be cool/cute. Have you ever Watched any of the Full Metal Alchemist animes? Think cute little Dragon Automail.

I hope I'm not being overly critical, I'm just trying to lend my expertise on biomechanical creatures.

That's the last Steampunk guy for a while anyway, he was requested by one of the winners I had on a Facebook competition.
I've also got to keep costs and time in mind if my intention is to sell at a normalized price and I'm crafting on a deadline. Once I'm finished with my studies and I have some monies to get more clay I can start "experimenting" again.

I guess it's ok, although not used to getting crit.

Yeah I love FMA.

Oh good point. Would it really be that much more costly to shape a wing and paint it a little differently? You already did that here. Well I can't wait to see that. I love observing Artists experiment. That's the most fun thing about DA, watching artists learn and grow and being there all that time.

I can see why, your sculpts are usually too adorable to critique.

Me to, it was such a great series. I'm glad they went back and redid the anime to, FMAB follows the manga where the first one swerved off into left field. Plus the Animation is Even though I stopped collecting Anime(it got too damned expensive), I still want FMAB in my anime collection. Who's your favorite character? For me, its tough. Colonel Mustang was a stone cold badass, but Armstong is pretty funny and has cool Alechmy. Plus I really like Christopher R Sabat's voice acting since I watch anime dubbed. So many awesome characters in that anime, and such a refreshing story line to. Its definitely one of the best animes out there.

Yeah, love the newer one. Although I'm glad I watched the first one first (if that makes sense O.o), one of the best bittersweet stories I've ever experienced.Β

Oops guess I didn't hit send on this. Oh well.

I lost interest in it once I heard it was way different from the Manga. And it did get kinda weird for me to. So the combination made me lose interest. I think now I'd rather go back and watching after watching FMAB to compare it to the actual story. My buddy watched a FMA movie the other day, it was good but did nothing for the story.

I'm working on a couple steampunk orders todayΒ  - it must be steampunk day Β  Love the goggles - I usually perch mine on the head and try to work the horns around them...it can get so frustrating though >.<

I tried to perch goggles on one of mine, the blue one from a while back, but I think their lack of forehead makes it rather difficult, he just didn't look right.

I rather like how they hang around the neck on yours.Β Β  My dragons have more of a forehead so the forehead works...I think I'd have trouble with the neck dangle lol

Have I told you how much I like your steampunk dragons' goggles? I think I have, but I wanted to say it again! They're great. :]
I wish the big image was a bit less blurry. >_<

thanks, they're fun to make, although still can't put them on their actual face - it looks so weird, so around their necks is best for now

I tried to bring the focus more onto their eyes and faces, but I think the depth of focus there was way too shallow.

Haha, it's the same reason I don't put glasses on my dragons. Mine just look weird since their eyes are on the sides of their heads! But that's okay, how many steampunk themed characters actually wear their goggles as eye protection? I think they're usually just for show.

I understand what you're going for, as I try to do the same with my pictures, but in this one, I really want to look at the details like the goggles and the key, and I just can't!

Hehe, all I can get away with is a monacle, that still looks ok, but yeah, glasses just don't work because of where their eyes are.

I updated it. I think the focus on the eyes idea works for facebook or etsy, where you're trying to "sell" the piece to people that don't necessarily sculpt, but for dA, where there are more artists doing the same type of work you want to focus on details.
